can you explain nu-metal to me, crut, I'm lol-old.

sarahel, Saturday, 19 March 2011 22:41 (fourteen years ago)

when i worked at a modern rock station, someone called up and requested Korn, but me & my friend who was answering the phone for me hadn't heard of them, so he was all, "Korn? The vegetable? Uh, I don't think it's in season right now."

sarahel, Saturday, 19 March 2011 22:43 (fourteen years ago)

you know what, i don't have a problem with this stuff being discussed here.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 March 2011 01:02 (fourteen years ago)

In the End... there's only one thing to vote for.

Threadkiller General (Viceroy), Sunday, 20 March 2011 02:46 (fourteen years ago)

I completely forgot "Drive" existed tbh, despite the fact that I heard it played nearly every hour during 2001-2002

dude this is like the only time I would ever vote Crazy Town

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 21 March 2011 00:33 (fourteen years ago)

"How It Reminds Me" p much is ground zero for when rock radio stations became absolutely fucking intolerable

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 21 March 2011 00:35 (fourteen years ago)

How have I not heard any of these?

President Keyes, Monday, 21 March 2011 00:40 (fourteen years ago)

how many of these were big hits (top ten) on pop radio? (crazy town i know was) how many were hits overseas?

balls, Monday, 21 March 2011 00:42 (fourteen years ago)

the only other one of these i liked at the time was sum41, i came around to the linkin park eventually. i have thankfully forgotten most of the rest.

balls, Monday, 21 March 2011 00:44 (fourteen years ago)

I know I'm gonna catch shit on this, but I can't really stand Linkin Park, at least their first album...

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 21 March 2011 00:46 (fourteen years ago)

ha i don't think linkin park are a sacred cow around here, i think they've benefited here from ilxors generally leaning in favor of vague depeche mode descendants over aggro fratboys and white beatboxers w/ dreads.

balls, Monday, 21 March 2011 00:51 (fourteen years ago)

ehhh...that's a bit of a stretch...

anyways, most of these were huge...I know in the summer of '01 I couldn't get away from the Staind song...

I was 19 at the time and I kinda liked nu-metal until about this time...another song that I hated: Papa Roach's "Last Resort". only bands from this period that I'll still fuck with are Deftones and System (how is Chop Suey not an option in this poll?)

most of them were big pop hits (only ones that missed the top 10: Fuel, Sum 41 and Alien Ant Farm) and pretty much all of them seemed to be hits in at least a few other countries

urself s steel (some dude), Monday, 21 March 2011 00:59 (fourteen years ago)

Crazy Town - Butterfly
Sum 41 - Fat Lip
Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal
Nickelback - How You Remind Me
Linkin Park - In The End

were all big hits here

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:02 (fourteen years ago)

pretty sure top 10 too

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:02 (fourteen years ago)

God what an awful collection of songs. I vote Incubus - Drive, as it's one of the only ones that's listenable.

Worst Modern Rock list of my lifetime, I gotta say.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 21 March 2011 01:06 (fourteen years ago)

only 9 #1s in 52 weeks?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:07 (fourteen years ago)

are US charts based on airplay rather than sales based?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:08 (fourteen years ago)

oddly I remember it well because it was the last year I didn't have a cd player in my car, and I had a 45 day drive to school each day, so I kinda flipped through the crappy local stations just to find tolerable songs, and I heard every one of these a million times over.

sometimes magic sounds like tape (San Te), Monday, 21 March 2011 01:08 (fourteen years ago)

xp singles are kind of a weird concept around here...

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 21 March 2011 01:09 (fourteen years ago)

i like all of these songs after the feul one

blingee cummings (J0rdan S.), Monday, 21 March 2011 01:10 (fourteen years ago)

1. fat lip (best song ever)
2. hanging by a moment
3. smooth criminal
4. how you remind me
5. in the end
6. butterfly
7. drive
8. it's been a while
9. fuel

blingee cummings (J0rdan S.), Monday, 21 March 2011 01:11 (fourteen years ago)

actually i don't really like the staind one

blingee cummings (J0rdan S.), Monday, 21 March 2011 01:11 (fourteen years ago)

when did modern rock radio really start to die off? it's still going strong here but death was in the air no doubt. looking at that lineup i can't say i miss it.

balls, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:14 (fourteen years ago)

hot 100 is based on a combination of airplay and sales w/ that ratio being adjusted every few years depending on how comfortable billboard is w/ how black the top ten is, i think the subcharts are more heavily (maybe totally?) weighed toward airplay. i go back and forth over whether i prefer brit style charts (more fun, fluid) vs american style charts (much much more accurate barometer of a song's popularity in the larger culture)(considering how small a portion of the population buys music airplay should be more heavily weighed if anything, and truth be told factors beyond airplay and sales should be entered into it)(eg it seems crazy that some station in idaho playing adele twenty times last week will be accounted for in the chart but however many million ppl watching rebecca black on youtube won't have any bearing).

balls, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:21 (fourteen years ago)

airplay to me seems a bit more like big labels can buy chart placings. But I suppose if noone buys singles in the US it doesn't matter BUT, dont people buy from itunes or buy ringtones? That gets counted in sales here.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:23 (fourteen years ago)

i'm pretty sure the genre charts like modern rock, hip hop/R&B are purely airplay

some dude, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:24 (fourteen years ago)

xxxp to balls: modern rock is still going on. check out:

nickelback "shakin hands" & "something in your mouth"
theory of a dead man, "i hate my life"
my darkest days, "porn star dancing"

just talk to underrated aerosmith albums i have loved; he's really into all that stuff...

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:28 (fourteen years ago)

we just dont tend to have any sort of rock stations though i think kerrang radio/tv on digital plays the stuff mentioned in this thread.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:29 (fourteen years ago)

but i dunno how many people have DAB radios

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:29 (fourteen years ago)

...a 45 day drive to school each day...

wow I'd get annoyed by the radio too!

Threadkiller General (Viceroy), Monday, 21 March 2011 01:33 (fourteen years ago)

sales gets accounted for, and the last time billboard tweaked the hot 100 ratio it was in favor of sales, justifiably since ppl were starting to buy singles alot more than they had in decades. the #1 spot saw ALOT more turnover as a result, now it takes a real EVENT single for something to do a four-five-six week run at #1 whereas in the 90s a multi-month turn at the top was the norm (understandably since from what i gather the airplay breakdown of #1 vs #2, #3, etc is comparable to benford's law)(now w/ pop stations having twenty song playlists and leaning heavily on the top five i wonder what the breakdown is, if it's still weighed so heavily to #1, even w/ #s 2,3,4 & 5 getting played every two hours also). big labels can buy chart placings regardless (small labels do it on the albums chart all the time), if you're looking for a chart that's for artists and fans and popgeeks the britchart is a better model but if you're looking for a chart that's trying to gauge a song's impact/presence in the larger culture during a certain week the billboard model is much much more accurate, if still highly flawed.

balls, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:37 (fourteen years ago)

now it takes a real EVENT single for something to do a four-five-six week run at #1 whereas in the 90s a multi-month turn at the top was the norm

ain't this the truth; I still remember back in the day when Whitney Houston and Boyz II Men would sit on the top spot of the charts for a few months at a time...

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 21 March 2011 01:40 (fourteen years ago)

whitney and bryan adams and wet wet wet had like 16 week runs each in the 90s here.

sometimes magic sounds like tape (San Te), Monday, 21 March 2011 03:56 (fourteen years ago)

haha i hate to admit it but i kinda-to-really like all these songs, even though in most cases i don't like any other songs i have heard by that artist

1) hanging by a moment
2) it's been awhile
3) drive
4) in the end
5) smooth criminal
6) how you remind me
7) fat lip
8) butterfly
9) hemorrhage

admitting i like a staind song that much is probably the most embarrassing part of this post but oh well

teledyldonix, Monday, 21 March 2011 06:22 (fourteen years ago)

and yes the genre billboard charts are purely airplay

teledyldonix, Monday, 21 March 2011 06:27 (fourteen years ago)

krüt schwitters (crüt), Monday, 21 March 2011 07:55 (fourteen years ago)

I'll accept "Butterfly" because I like the bass sample.. I don't especially hate any of these but I have no immediate desire to hear any of them ever again.

billstevejim, Monday, 21 March 2011 08:08 (fourteen years ago)

In The End > Butterfly > Smooth Criminal > Drive > It's Been Awhile > Fat Lip > How You Remind Me > Hanging By A Moment/Hemorrhage (In My Hands) (can't figure out which one is more mediocre)

krüt schwitters (crüt), Monday, 21 March 2011 09:12 (fourteen years ago)

Sum 41: "Fat Lip" (Island) 18
The White Stripes: "Hotel Yorba" (Sympathy for the Record Industry) 18
