it seems that the name "steve forbert" has taken on a life of its own in here. what does it pertain to? a one-hit wonder? potential dashed by "the man"?

cheers,

derek

aha (i think!) that's quite interesting, thanks Jody (or is it Jody Beth?).

hmmm, would i be right in saying then that Kate Rusby is the Steve Forbert of English Traditional Music?

Call me Jody. I don't know Kate Rusby, but I'm sure she is. :-)

Jody it is then!
actually she's got a lovely voice, perfect sunday morning "veggin'" music.

Not fair to call him a one-hit wonder, since most folkie singer-songwriters don't tend to produce hits at all. (Has Leonard Cohen ever had a hit, other than the Noel Harrison version of "Suzanne"?) In baseball he'd be called a journeyman infielder, a guy who does a reliable, steady job without ever standing out.

Would he be with one time his entire career, or does 'journeyman' imply he'd wander around until he found his place?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, he got on a major label, then was dropped, and went to some smaller ones. I think journeymen do tend to get picked up by different teams without staying long, since they're good for plugging holes in the lineup, but generally teams are always looking for someone with more potential.

My description is probably too generous, since I recall Forbert not merely being unassuming but unassumingly blah. But I think my description fits the intention of the people who devised the Forbert game.

three years pass...
Just got a Kate Rusby album; haven't had a chance to listen, though I know a good opening should someone choose to review it. "Kate Rusby, who's been called the Steve Forbert of English Traditional Music..."
