'sad but true' was the only one i was willing to give any credit to at the time but it's not like i have ever had any urge to deliberately listen to it. voted 'nothing else matters' for that balearic version a few years back i actually did deliberately listen to a couple of times, runnerup to 'enter sandman' for 'AND THE THINGS THAT WILL BITE!!! YEAH!', a fitting lyrics for how pathetically toothless this band had become.

i have only listened to this album a handful of times and rarely feel the desire to, but that's mainly because i love all 5 of the big singles to some extent and hear them all on the radio on a daily basis

i have to be honest if 'sad but true' was by jackyl i would be like 'holy shit that jackyl song is pretty awesome' and if someone was going to play some jackyl around me (which has happened at work, which should be an osha violation) i would be like 'ok, but ONLY if it's 'sad but true''. but for metallica, considering that up to this point not only had they been capable of better, they had been incapable of worse, 'sad but true' is still not good enough, even if it is better than 'AND THE THINGS THAT WILL BITE!!! YEAH!'.

I remember everyone at my high school had this album, and because of that I ended up buying it too. I actually liked most of the tunes because they were really catchy, though still a bit too metal for my tastes. Later on I got to know some real metalheads who told me Metallica sold out with this album, but who cares? None of the earlier Metallica stuff (supposedly better than this album) they played to me sounded quite as good and catchy, instead of hummable melodies they had just basic metal riffs and horror movie lyrics. I liked Load too, because it had some actual pop songs on it that didn't sound too much like metal.

Gonna vote for "Nothing Else Matters", because it's the least "hard" tune on this album, and also because of fond memories of teenage discos where I was holding on tightly to some girl while dancing to it.

Man I have never even heard "Sad But True," but since I found out it existed at age 14, I have had a "hilarious" "routine" wherein every time I use the phrase "sad but true," I always follow it with "like my favorite Metallica song." Which has resulted in some raised eyebrows from Metallica fans. "Really? Your favorite one?"

yeah it was a classic speech; I basically just quoted a bunch of pop song lyrics & movie references & strung them together into something sorta ~emotional~ & afterwards parents & teachers were like "that was so beautiful" & I was like, thank Lars.

my friend & I were both giving speeches that day & we competed to sneak the most pop cultural references in, but the grand prize was to get "Of Wolf And Man" in & we both failed.

"Holier Than Thou" and "Through The Never" have great riffs, really the only riff on the entire album that even come close to the standards Metallica set on previous albums.

Went with "Through the Never" because the chorus annoys me a little less.

Heard "Through the Never" on some "Mandatory Metallica" or whatever radio show last Friday night. I totally forgot how solid that song is!

I remember very little about this album outside of the singles and it's not because I didn't listen to it. It's just that everything that wasn't a single was completely washed away by the omnipresence of the singles. I mean, I probably listened to "The God That Failed" 40 or 50 times when that album came out, but I can't remember a note.

"The God That Failed" is the textbook definition of slog. still hate this fuckin' thing more than most of the rest of the album.

I actually listen to Load more than this album these days. 'The God That Failed' is easily my least favourite track on this, though.

Anyway I'd encourage bands to dick around a bit more with their back catalogue, especially the second-tier albums. Imagine Oasis came out with that Be Here Now remaster trimming three minutes off every song.

why the hell does "Don't Tread on Me" have fuckin' "America" from West Side Story in the intro, whose lyrics have no thematic connection to Jaymz's other than the fact that it's called "America"

'Don't Tread On Me' was what was written on the Gadsden flag (the snake on the front sleeve of Metallica comes from the same flag) - it was designed during the American Revolution.

It points the way to Load, that one.

Not really. I see it in the tradition of The Thing That Should Not Be or Harvester of Sorrow, but more polished and melodic.

My Friend of Misery is more Load-like imo, all blues scales and effects pedals.

ha, never noticed the America riff before.

it is kinda cheesy how arena rock/glammy the harmonies are on this. like, prior to AJFA, I think the only vocal harmony they'd even recorded was on "Sanitarium". AJFA had some subtle ones on the title track, "Eye of the Beholder", and "One", but that was it.

not surprising given Rock but this is probably why the songs suck so bad live - a lot of the slickness was compensating for the deficiencies of the lesser tunes.

surprisingly though, they brought back "Holier Than Thou" on this tour, and ...it kinda works live! without the overproduced cock rock suffocating it, the song gets new legs.

The HU released a cover of Sad But True. It's far from my favorite Metallica song (and I'm kinda surprised it won THIS HARD here!) but they do a great job with it.

Today I just might vote for the neglected Struggle Within, it actually kinda bangs and I have had "what the hell WHAT THE HELL" popping into my head constantly over the last few months. Also it's hilarious to me that the chorus ends "struggle within...the struggling within".
