For all microphone fiends, the NOMINATIONS THREAD for the BEST RAP/HIP-HOP SINGLES AND ALBUMS EVER poll

Message Bookmarked

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dr61P5P-jFc

Nominations end 21st April, in 1 month.

You get to nominate 25 singles/freestyles/breaks and 25 albums/mixtapes/instrumental albums.

There will be 2 polls.

You can vote or nominate for only one if you wish, but not 50 of 1 and 0 of the other - 25 is the limit on each. Real headz shouldn't have a problem with either side though.

The votes will let you vote for a list of up to 50 singles and 50 albums. The points system will be in descending order, #2 = 49 points, #3 = 48 etc. but with an additional boost of 60 points for your #1. You don't have to vote for 50 of each and if you say just voted for three records, they would be attributed 60, 49, 48.

Preferably I'd like to get enough votes to make this a serious TOP 150 of each, counting down 30 on each weekday.

Peace Godz.

Discussion of what counts as hip-hop or not can come in this thread if you want to be a sucker and try to pretend that James Brown or Mary J. Blige or Asher Roth should be allowed in.

Nult AGL (a hoy hoy), Monday, 21 March 2011 01:53 (fourteen years ago)

requesting unranked ballot option for those of us who don't care to decide on rankings within a top 50 ballot, plz?

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Monday, 21 March 2011 01:57 (fourteen years ago)

Hadn't thought about it. Sure. Too lazy to do the maths right now.

Nult AGL (a hoy hoy), Monday, 21 March 2011 01:58 (fourteen years ago)

or, an option for #1 (60 pts.) + 49 unranked tracks (25 pts. apiece) would be rad

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Monday, 21 March 2011 02:03 (fourteen years ago)

Pete Rock & CL Smooth - T.R.O.Y. (They Reminisce Over You)

(traxx)

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 21 March 2011 02:06 (fourteen years ago)

ilxor yeah that is cool.

So voting will be 50 ranked votes, 60-#1 and then 49-#2 down; 60-#1 and then 25-#unranked. You have to have a #1 though.

Nult AGL (a hoy hoy), Monday, 21 March 2011 02:08 (fourteen years ago)

Yes, can people clearly state whether things are tracks or albums. Even if I do have p decent knowledge of things, I may still get things confused.

Electro hits like Jam On It totally count.

Nult AGL (a hoy hoy), Monday, 21 March 2011 05:00 (fourteen years ago)

In that case, I'd like to swap out that Sole song that nobody would vote for besides me with this:

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Monday, 21 March 2011 07:53 (fourteen years ago)

Almost nommed that one. Didn't like it as much as I'd remembered liking it upon a quick revisit.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 21 March 2011 07:56 (fourteen years ago)

Jesus, what is wrong with it? There's a reason it's the most sampled rap single ever...

Sure it sounds a little dated but so does almost all classic hip-hop.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Monday, 21 March 2011 08:01 (fourteen years ago)

Soft spot for this track:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKRAFPHD8W4

Never figured out where that guitar riff came from. Anyone know?

Nult AGL (a hoy hoy), Monday, 21 March 2011 11:35 (fourteen years ago)

guessing grime counts as hip-hop? (and indeed the global hip-hop diaspora eg mc solaar)

lex pretend, Monday, 21 March 2011 11:41 (fourteen years ago)

Even though it's good and everything, I'm kinda hoping 36 Chambers doesn't win the album poll. I have no idea what might win the tracks poll - that one is certainly the more interesting of the two.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 March 2011 11:43 (fourteen years ago)

I see no reason why non-US hip hop shouldn't count. I thought of nominating a couple of Finnish rap records, but decided to leave them out because none of you would've heard them anyway.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 March 2011 11:44 (fourteen years ago)

ctrl-f'd couldn't see it so v pleased to be the one to nominate the eventual poll-topper:
Digital Underground - The Humpty Dance

calumerio, Monday, 21 March 2011 11:45 (fourteen years ago)

I'm hoping someone else besides me will vote for Elementalz and Kik Off, those are dope UK albums.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 March 2011 11:46 (fourteen years ago)

http://www.rivmixx.com/uploads/assets//hiphop/dizzee-rascal-embed.jpg

considering this was the cover of hiphop connection, i'll allow it.

Nult AGL (a hoy hoy), Monday, 21 March 2011 11:46 (fourteen years ago)

(x-post)

Holy shit, I completely forgot about Digital Underground! Someone please nominate their first two albums.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 March 2011 11:46 (fourteen years ago)

Are we voting any track of any given album or strictly limited to single releases?

Moka, Monday, 21 March 2011 11:55 (fourteen years ago)

Nult AGL (a hoy hoy), Monday, 21 March 2011 12:04 (fourteen years ago)

Moka: Well considering I opened it up to freestyles, I think album tracks can count.

Nult AGL (a hoy hoy), Monday, 21 March 2011 12:07 (fourteen years ago)

i guess the rule for r&b/hip-hop tracks is division of verses between rapping and singing? if 50% or more of verses are rapping, it counts, if less then it doesn't?

lex pretend, Monday, 21 March 2011 12:12 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think we need a strict formula. I nommed that one Cee-Lo album because it feels like hip hop to me, even though there might be more than 50% of singing on it. If you nom something, and people don't think it's hip hop enough, they shouldn't vote for it. Simple as that.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 March 2011 12:16 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah. I mean I don't want "but it's called 'hip hop soul'". Like think of it as if it is Ja Rule ft. Ashanti then its... eligible but if its Ashanti ft. Ja Rule then gtfo

Nult AGL (a hoy hoy), Monday, 21 March 2011 12:16 (fourteen years ago)

Two instrumental hip hop records there- what's the thinking on those?

Neil S, Monday, 21 March 2011 13:41 (fourteen years ago)

I think it should be ok - I nommed an instrumental hip hop compilation too.

Tuomas, Monday, 21 March 2011 13:42 (fourteen years ago)

really tho i have no idea how to even begin making a ballot 4 this

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 20 April 2011 08:37 (fourteen years ago)

tuomas there isn't even an r&b chorus on the khia song o_0

Eh? It definitely has a chorus sung in rnb style ("so lick it now, lick it good..."), plus there's no rapping in it.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 20 April 2011 08:40 (fourteen years ago)

Well, okay, it has these semi-sung, semi-rapped verses, but that's not uncommon in modern rnb. Stylistically it's still much closer to rnb than hip-hop.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 20 April 2011 08:42 (fourteen years ago)
