hi Gregory,
some Slade might not go amiss, and some Gary Glitter too (although he's recently been nabbed for being a nonce). the Sweet were pretty okay ("Tiger Feet") as was Wizzard ("See My Baby Jive")

T. Rex has a very limited scope to what they did and many, many dodgy lyrics, but both Electric Warrior and Slider (if you can find it) have lots of pleasures to offer. Simply fun music.

It's very, very weird to think of Suede as lumped in with glam rock as opposed to being inspired by it. But hey, that's time for you. ;-)

I see nobody has mentioned early Roxy Music yet. LET ME RECTIFY THIS GLARING ERROR. Oh, and absolutely everything by T. Rex. ;-)

Top choices, philT. And as for many, many dodgy lyrics in relation to T. Rex, I would point out that he is one of my favourite lyricists ever: how can you not love "Deborah, you look like a stallion / Your sunken face is like a galleon" or "Metal Guru, has it been / Just like a silver-studded sabretooth dream" or "You look like a car / You've got a hubcap diamond-star halo". He is also one of my favourite singers, guitarists, songwriters and sex gods. This is my youth: first single ever: Ride A White Swan; first album, Slade Alive. Still love them both, and mid-period Sweet singles (Tiger Feet was by Mud, Derek, but we are getting off on the wrong foot elsewhere, so that is certainly not criticism! And it was a good record), Mott from Dudes on (Mott is a genuinely great album), the first three Roxy albums, the first couple of Cockney Rebels, any singles not only by Gary Glitter but also the Glitterband, two Dolls albums, Wizzard, Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane (all his '70s stuff is excellent, but most of it isn't glam), and other odd bits. I can live without Suede (though the first McAlmont & Butler might warrant a positive mention here).

Hmm thanks for clarifying something for me phil. I used to think I didn't much like Glam, but also had a sneaking suspicion it was because I hadn't heard a lot of the best stuff. But I know almost everything on your list and I only like about 4 of them. Obv I was right in the first place: with some rare exceptions, I just don't like it.

Never said I didn't love him. Dodgy lyrics can be plently lovable; you cited some for me. Like I said, fun music.

Other than the obvious greats, Steve Harley is really good.

eight years pass...

Finally this track is turning up on youtube. Seriously one of the great glam songs of all time. I may be this band's biggest fan. Composed of some seriously famous guys, and *way* overdue for a reissue, though god knows who'd buy it.

[Ok, to be fair this is the only real "glam" track on the album.]

not glam per se as its a rough and ready track, but wait till the 1 minute mark to hear the obvious Sweet influence.

That Die Anderen track is all time classic. The rest of the album sounds more like the Bee Gees, sadly.

Borbotemungus or something like that. (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 28 October 2010 08:17 (fifteen years ago)
