not rly feeling that squareoff, jahlil beats can be so gr8 & that frantic melodic repetition is a part of most of his best work but idk the melody on that one is too juvenile or something

i love that beat, only thing i dont like on it is cory gunz lil wayne imitation

yeah i don't think i love it as much as "where dat chicken at" and i'm not keen on cory gunz either but square off is (are?) great. "up close & personal, the bullets gon interview him"

lex pretend, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 21:17 (fourteen years ago)

Pedantry alert but "The L Word" was a single - however I generally cosign whole swathes of lex's (and jordan's and flopson's) lists.

Stuff not already mentioned:

S.E.C.T. ft Ben Westbeech - In The Park
Myshy / Fuzzy Logick - Playground
Art Department - I C U
Ill Blu - Monsta

Tim F, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 21:50 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah duh i knew "the l word" was a single, just hadn't heard it until the album

lex pretend, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 22:01 (fourteen years ago)

is "monsta" a released thing or a two-minutes-mid-radio-set thing

lex pretend, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 22:01 (fourteen years ago)

actually there are lots of good EPs this year - sunny sweeney's s/t, ill blu's meltdown, miss fire's the female touch all stand out

lex pretend, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 22:02 (fourteen years ago)

I think "Monsta" is getting a digital/vinyl release in a month or so, so it seemed okay to include it here. In general funky producers have really stepped up in terms of getting stuff out to market.

I'll be disappointed if "Friday" doesn't make next year's top 77 countdown.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 23:23 (fourteen years ago)

Can't actually think of anything I've enjoyed as a standalone track this year (bar Friday) but I guess that says more about how I consume music at the moment.

there's four great tunes on the new jennifer hudson btw if you wanna maintain the facade that nu r&b is worth an average person's time

r|t|c, Friday, 25 March 2011 12:43 (fourteen years ago)

The first couple months of the year are always a bit funny when i think what are my favs of the year so far and I realized they all came out in december of the previous year.

Not actually that many 2011 releases off top of my head for some reason but these

anton zap - miles and miles
nenad markovic - coney island
matthew burton - small winner

uhhh was it not you who first repped for the kandi album on ilm?

lex pretend, Friday, 25 March 2011 12:59 (fourteen years ago)

iirc finney randomly said he was looking forward to it before it was even news so i'll give that one to him

r&b still having good solid stuff in dribs & drabs for the niche listener isn't really my point though

is "monsta" a released thing or a two-minutes-mid-radio-set thing

Dude does this mean you haven't heard Ill Blu's Mistajam mix? It's a radio set but it's almost exclusively their own stuff and it is apocalyptically banging (also only about 25mins and in good quality).

Matt DC, Friday, 25 March 2011 14:03 (fourteen years ago)

Monsta is straight up single-of-the-year contender for me. We need a Ill Blu hype thread really.

I think Monsta is the one with the really mentalist OTT drop. I mean, they're all like that, but this one is even more so. It's sort of the UK funky equivalent of Vitalic or Black Strobe in its ludicrous sci-fi bombast.

Matt DC, Friday, 25 March 2011 14:10 (fourteen years ago)

are these really all you got to add though or were you just tailoring to the ilm eunuch eclectic

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 13:27 (fourteen years ago)

I steal most of my ideas from people here anyway, you don't need me to tell you I'm listening to "colouring book" or "make up sex" or "no ordinary love" or "that candy paint" or etc.

haha no offence like, sorry bruv

i even really like near everything on that list but just something about the look of it all put together made me wanna nailbomb stuff

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 21:21 (fourteen years ago)

that was actually a small part of the screed as well, the art in and strategic value of drawing together songs from all around to form a list that is powerfully subtextual

i saw tim's billboard list so i know it exists outside of my head

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 21:26 (fourteen years ago)

ha i agree tho i created this thread so i could exploit it not grace it w powerfully subtextual lists of my own & i do admire one (a lot) when i see them

flopson, Monday, 16 May 2011 21:34 (fourteen years ago)

Dj beez April! Excellent mix.

I think in theory I like poppy bassline best but then often the spooky stuff is erm prettier? If you accused me of doing the classic herb listener of imposing values from other genres I'd be hardpressed to defend myself - probably there's some hallucination of hyper-on experience vs terra danjah vibes at work.

Btw billboard list?

Tim F, Monday, 16 May 2011 21:42 (fourteen years ago)

Will make people retch on principle but the bassline remix of Katy perry's "E.T" also is very pretty.

Tim F, Monday, 16 May 2011 21:55 (fourteen years ago)

btw, question for the geeks: is there an app that parses a text file and turns it into a youtube playlist? could be handy.

Lex remember how you refused to check out the Ill Blu remix of "Parachute" for ages, and you were wrong?

Tim F, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:07 (fourteen years ago)

xpost not that this is as good as that, but.

Tim F, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:07 (fourteen years ago)

katy perry is way more egregious than cheryl cole - you'd actually have to remove her voice entirely to make her songs palatable, whereas with cheryl a plank is a plank is neutral all the time

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:12 (fourteen years ago)

Perry is hardly offensive if you think of her as an anonymous bassline divalet, "good pop songs" or quality vocals are hardly the point of this music, really the more obnoxious the better. Obv the context is entirely different w/r/t the OG song.

I'm guessing you never liked Scooter though.
