Norwegian albums poll

Message Bookmarked

Based largely upon RYM picks by people from English language countries (to avoid local Scandinavian favourites unknown outside our area). But not including many of the most obviously esoteric picks. One one album per act.

I am sure some of you guys miss some picks, but these would normally be supposed to be the Norwegian albums most famous in the English speaking world.

No loch ness mouse?

keythhtyek, Thursday, 24 March 2011 01:50 (fourteen years ago)

I didn't find them anywhere in that list at all. (Probably closer to the bottom). They are a great pop band and all, but, you know, polls don't have so many options, and should also be limited even within those.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 24 March 2011 01:51 (fourteen years ago)

(And even though I hate all those metal albums, the poll just wouldn't be right without them)

was listening to that bel canto the other day, my girlfriend made me turn it off (too many years of coffeeshop work has made her oversensitive to that kinda thing). Will vote for a heavy metal thing, not sure which one

CharlieS, Thursday, 24 March 2011 04:23 (fourteen years ago)

Substrata is one of my top 10 or so favorite albums ever, so that

ciderpress, Thursday, 24 March 2011 05:11 (fourteen years ago)

I've spent too great a portion of my life listening to Scoundrel Days to not vote for it here.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 24 March 2011 05:18 (fourteen years ago)

Timothy's Monster

U2 the musical by Spiderman (CaptainLorax), Thursday, 24 March 2011 05:45 (fourteen years ago)

So much awesome metal. But I voted Turbonegro, which is always a good option.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Thursday, 24 March 2011 07:07 (fourteen years ago)

Discover now there should have been some Mari Boine album in the list, but it would surprise me if it would be anywhere near winning, so I guess no disaster.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 24 March 2011 11:26 (fourteen years ago)

It was hard to vote against Darkthrone but Vikingligr Veldi is the best album on that list.

Timothy's Monster seconded, great album by a great band.

Marty Innerlogic, Thursday, 24 March 2011 11:33 (fourteen years ago)

I hope I'm not the only one voting for Royksopp. It's dated a bit but I have really fond memories of that album. I wanted to vote for metal, but none of those choices (not even Nightside) are my faves.

Of the ones I've heard, Where You Go I Go Too.

Matt DC, Thursday, 24 March 2011 14:19 (fourteen years ago)

M2M's Shades of Purple sold more than all of those, except a-ha (and just barely). It's also better than most of them, and more influential.

abcfsk, Thursday, 24 March 2011 14:22 (fourteen years ago)

wtf have you people not HEARD Scoundrel Days?????

Röyksopp, but Scoundrel Days is great too.

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 24 March 2011 20:04 (fourteen years ago)

Voting for Darkthrone in a Geir poll -- life is sweet.

Threadkiller General (Viceroy), Thursday, 24 March 2011 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

Though I thought hard about voting for a-ha or Jaga Jazzist, just that particular Darkthrone album was my introduction to real black metal and is one of my favorite albums of all time.

Threadkiller General (Viceroy), Thursday, 24 March 2011 21:12 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah it's Darkthrone vs. Emperor (there's a good argument that the Burzum album is as good/better than either, but I will listen to Burzum albums without paying for them, but I won't vote for his albums in polls--ethics!) Voting Emperor, just cuz, but not for any convincing reason. They are both great.

Weird choices on Satyricon, Immortal, Ulver.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 24 March 2011 21:32 (fourteen years ago)

Who are you voting for, Geir?

ban this sick stunt (anagram), Thursday, 24 March 2011 21:33 (fourteen years ago)

I really like MAdrugada but prefer their later stuff - and wow, Kvelertak got up there fast. Not sure who I'll go for.

Simon H. Shit (Simon H.), Thursday, 24 March 2011 21:48 (fourteen years ago)

why "scoundrel days"? surely "hunting high and low" was better known and more successful in the english-speaking world?

flow (chilli), Thursday, 24 March 2011 22:05 (fourteen years ago)

Who are you voting for, Geir?

"Scoundrel Days". Although I love the Annie and Sondre Lerche ones as well.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 24 March 2011 22:28 (fourteen years ago)

surely "hunting high and low" was better known and more successful in the english-speaking world?

"Hunting High & Low" was the one with the most and biggest hits. However, "Scoundrel Days" is considered to be a better album among the majority of those who have actually listened to both a lot. Also scoring way higher on RYM in spite of fewer votes (although that is of course also because HHAL is more famous and as such attract more love ratings from haters)

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 24 March 2011 22:29 (fourteen years ago)

Explain the lack of M2M, please.

abcfsk, Thursday, 24 March 2011 22:35 (fourteen years ago)

Like I said, these are based upon RYM ratings. Looking up "Shades of Purple" it has a rating of 2.97 out of 5 so no wonder it didn't make the list. Probably considered manufactured throwaway pap by the typical music geek. Which is was to some extent as well (but Marit Larsen's two solo albums have been ace)

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 24 March 2011 22:38 (fourteen years ago)

A bit odd to exclude the one Norwegian album of the last 25 years to have made a real commercial impact across several continents, anyway.

abcfsk, Thursday, 24 March 2011 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

well if RYM is anything, its at least "a bit odd"

Threadkiller General (Viceroy), Thursday, 24 March 2011 22:56 (fourteen years ago)

RYM is probably my favorite music website

U2 the musical by Spiderman (CaptainLorax), Thursday, 24 March 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

but.... Geir's list isn't a stock RYM list or anything

U2 the musical by Spiderman (CaptainLorax), Thursday, 24 March 2011 23:04 (fourteen years ago)

this Spirit Magazine list might be interesting

U2 the musical by Spiderman (CaptainLorax), Thursday, 24 March 2011 23:07 (fourteen years ago)

RYM is great as a music database if you don't take the rankings and such at face value since it's very heavy on metalheads and indie nerds who haven't bought into street rap or chart pop

ciderpress, Thursday, 24 March 2011 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

dont forget the prog mob

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 24 March 2011 23:12 (fourteen years ago)

actually, this is the stock RYM Norway list

(take out all the metal and you got an interesting poll :)

A bit odd to exclude the one Norwegian album of the last 25 years to have made a real commercial impact across several continents, anyway.

"Melody AM" is in there. It probably made more of an impact than the M2M one. Particularly if you also count critics lists.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Friday, 25 March 2011 12:55 (fourteen years ago)

(take out all the metal and you got an interesting poll :)

Except I doubt the likes of DeLillos, Dum Dum Boys, Jokke og Valentinerne and Raga Rockers make much sense to people who don't understand Norwegian lyrics.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Friday, 25 March 2011 12:56 (fourteen years ago)

Btw. taking out all the metal would be an easy task, technically:

Of all the dozen plus Motorpsycho albums, why Timothy's Monster? Is that some sort of consensus favorite in Norway? I'd consider voting for their latest, but haven't been able to find TM.

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 25 March 2011 13:10 (fourteen years ago)

gotta rep Ulver. Shadows Of The Sun is so great.

gman59, Friday, 25 March 2011 15:37 (fourteen years ago)

love Apocalypse Dudes though

― Fastnbulbous,

6 months ago there was a Motorpsycho Album Cup over at the forums. The winner of the finals was Trust Us with 101 votes over Timothy's Monster with 99 votes. Or as I pointed out in the forums, it was a "tie with alpha level = .01 (allowing a one vote confidence interval - both TM and TU would overlap at 100 votes)".

U2 the musical by Spiderman (CaptainLorax), Friday, 25 March 2011 17:28 (fourteen years ago)

Only heard a-ha, Datarock, Royksopp, and Sondre Lerche - IMO Datarock is the clear winner if you're talking about the reissue that added four tunes and dropped some of the weaker stuff. Otherwise, Royksopp. Didn't really like Sondre but his cover of "Europa and the Pirate Twins" was awesome.

these are all great, town btwn. a-ha and linstrom as #1

I believe every time Norwegians (critics or fans) have voted for the best Norwegian albums of all time, "Timothy's Monster" is the one by Motorpsycho that has placed the highest. And the one closest to it is usually "Demon Box".
I have noticed "Trust Us" seems popular amongst non-Norwegian Motorpsycho fans though, maybe because that was sort of a breakthrough for them among fans outside Norway, I dunno.

This could very well be true, it certainly is for me, since I discovered Motorpsycho in 1998 when Trust Us was released. VPRO-radio in The Netherlands used to play the single of that album, Hey Jane, a lot. Also, it features Vortex Surfer which is one their most famous epics and definitely a fan-favourite. Aound this era they would ususally end their shows with that song.

Marty Innerlogic, Saturday, 26 March 2011 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

Ulver is so great. And that's my favorite of theirs.

My impression is that "The Golden Core" from "Timothy's Monster" is the epic most loved by their Norwegian fans.

Ha ha. Having a blast listening to Turbonegro for the first time in a decade. I see that Motorpsycho's Timothy's Monster was reissued as a 4CD box set last year. 3rd disc is some sort of original mix or demo, and 4th I think are B-sides and such. Anyone have it?

easy, lindstrøm.

Btw. I see this album doing very well on the RYM 70s list. It is very much considered an early Norwegian classic, but I was not aware it caught much attention abroad. Anyone from outside Norway familiar with it?
