What is the best remix of all time?

...from this list of all-time greatest remixes, chosen by yours truly. I limited it to only one tune per remixer, so people like Larry Levan and Shep Pettibone and Hardfloor wouldn't dominate the list.

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 25 March 2011 06:44 (fourteen years ago)

I'll see what I can do about the zip next week...

I didn't include any rap style remixes like "Ignition (Remix)" that add new vocals and lyrics to the tune, because IMO they are more like reworkings, rather than remixes in the traditional sense of the word.

So yeah, all the 30 remixes on my list would've been too much to upload as one zip file, so I split them into two. Here's the first part, covering the years from 1977 to 1993.

Here's the second part as a zip file, it covers the years from 1994 to 2009. It also includes a special bonus track that wasn't included in the poll (though it should've been), because I forgot about it.

Tuomas, Monday, 28 March 2011 22:34 (fourteen years ago)

Out of these, voted Summer/Cowley, with Rakim/Black/More/Haza in second place

Never even heard OF that remix before, but it def sounds like Pooh on the youtube

Noodle Vague causing major flashbacks with the No Diggity and Ready or Not DnB remixes.

Never heard of that No Diggity mix (surely a bootleg anyway?) either but the little bass squiggle that’s not taken from the original is sweeet

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Monday, 28 March 2011 23:43 (fourteen years ago)

(Basically I am totally against the idea of remixing a vintage song to fit with more recent trends - music sounded better in the past!)

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Monday, 28 March 2011 23:43 (fourteen years ago)

that mix of "Heart" rivals "Suburbia" in the "PSB take a great song and completely fuck over the single edit by making it unbearable" stakes

"Suburbia" was also better in the remixed version.

I didn't mention it in the original post, but I also excluded remixes done by the original artist or the original producer of the song - the poll has only mixes done by outside remixers. Otherwise the list of potential tunes would've been overwhelmingly long.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 06:25 (fourteen years ago)

these zips are making today so delightful! i am not sure i will ever be able to choose.

c sharp major, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 09:36 (fourteen years ago)

I didn't mention it in the original post, but I also excluded remixes done by the original artist or the original producer of the song - the poll has only mixes done by outside remixers.

A concept that I am very much against, because it changes the character of the song.

As soon as I saw Geir had posted on a remix thread I just couldn't look away.

Pop is superior to all other genres (DL), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 09:54 (fourteen years ago)

A concept that I am very much against, because it changes the character of the song.

Isn't "changing the character of the song" what remixing is all about? Though some of the earlier disco mixes I included, such as "Love Is the Message" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" don't really change the tune much, mostly just extend it.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 09:57 (fourteen years ago)

Isn't "changing the character of the song" what remixing is all about?

I generally strongly dislike the concept of remixing. The only exception would be adding a snare drum or maybe an extra synth or bass sound to make the single version sound catchier than the original.

The remix of "Disco 2000" to me is perfect because it does nothing except make the snare drum more powerful and add a synth effect to the bridge. Otherwise, it's the same great song.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 09:59 (fourteen years ago)

For me, the finished version of a song after the band leaves the studio, and are ready to release the album, is the one and only and definite version and usually there should never be more than one version of the same song. Write new songs instead.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 10:00 (fourteen years ago)

And, yes, I strongly dislike cover versions too.

The Summer/Cowley possibly IS the best remix of all time. So that was nice and easy!

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 10:36 (fourteen years ago)

I ended up voting for "Show Me Love". It's a brilliant tune, of course, but it's also quite remarkable in that the remix took an obscure (and not quite as brilliant) piece of pop house and changed everything except the vocals, thus creating a template for many other house tunes, as well as changing the course of Robin S.'s career. It's telling that most people don't even know there was an original, totally different version of the tune, but the sound of the Stonebridge remix is instantly recognizable to anyone who listened to dance music in the 90s.

But the remix is by an UK duo, and it was popular only in Europe (I think), plus it sounds European too. If Americans wanted to vote for proper American hip hop, wouldn't they have voted for the Big L tune?
