"crash into me" came on in a crowded bar where the soundsystem was very bass-y and I thought it was ani difranco

whatever it is, it's definitely *not* the one (can't remember the name/possibly never knew it) where he sings about getting older, and being all these different ages, and thinking sentimental vaguely dopey thoughts baout love/life/family, in the most excruciating falsetto of our time

bernard snowy, Friday, 25 March 2011 15:13 (fourteen years ago)

Crash is not-horrible album from a decade of tons of fucking awesome ones...even Phish had at least one really good one (Lawn Boy)

everything else DMB ever did is insufferable dogshit mind you

I think "Crush" was the one I didn't mind back in the day.

i'm pretty much fine with all the goofy funky upbeat singles from the first 2-3 albums. i will be bummed if "Crash Into Me" wins this, that song is ugh.

"Too Much" is another video that poisoned me against the song, preferred the slightly watered down version Tripping Billies

Destroy A. Monsters (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 25 March 2011 15:21 (fourteen years ago)

"Crash Into Me" is an okay track, but it's a little romcom'ed out. "Two Step" is still fantastic and gets my vote.

What Would You Say vs. Sister Hazel's "All For You"

Destroy A. Monsters (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 25 March 2011 15:25 (fourteen years ago)

I remember hearing "So Much To Say" on the radio as a kid and being like, dude, wtf, you obviously don't have all that much to say because you just keep repeating those 4 words

"Satellite" was good tho, I always dug it and didn't even realize it was by the same band until later

bernard snowy, Friday, 25 March 2011 15:26 (fourteen years ago)

"So Much To Say" is kinda dope imo, might get my vote

I am listening to "Two Step" for, I am pretty sure, the first time — hard to imagine this as a single, but it's enjoyable

this is just DM, not DMB - but is the only song I have ever heard by him that didn't make me want to stick my head in a vice

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfZ0rSVehmk

Grotjahn in the Moma (Pillbox), Friday, 25 March 2011 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

the only DMB song that tends to get stuck in my head is "Gravedigger," their minor alt-rock radio hit from 2004. the chorus goes, "gravedigger, when you dig my grave, bury me shallow, so I can feel the rain," and each verse is a biography of an everyday person who lived and died without fame or riches. it's DMB's very own Spoon River Anthology, and it really makes you stop and think about the fragility of human life.

by comparison, all of the songs listed here are stone-cold classics & I would give my soul to wipe "Gravedigger" from my memory forever.

Why I Am
You And Me

I read this as "Why I Am (You and Me)"

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 25 March 2011 15:49 (fourteen years ago)

i heard "Why I Am" a couple times last year (which is odd because it apparently never charted) and it was kinda nice, similar to the early stuff i like.

"Gravedigger" is from the same DM solo album Pillbox posted a song from iirc.

voted "Ants Marching", never minded this song when it was ubiquitous, which is the best I can say about it (or about the others).

I do quote "Don't Drink The Water" a lot for dadjoke comedy value.

Euler, Saturday, 26 March 2011 23:11 (fourteen years ago)

"Don't Drink The Water" was a nearly "Lakini's Juice"-level buzzkill in terms of their career at the time, i don't know how it would sound to me now but when i think of it i mostly lol

Lakini's Juice by Live was supposed to sound like Helmet. The only thing it had in common w DDtW were that they were both weirdly melodramatic alt-rock songs

drugnet (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 31 March 2011 05:03 (fourteen years ago)

well lets be fair, both of them are absolutely terrible so they do have that in common

broke my o_O face o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 31 March 2011 05:04 (fourteen years ago)

btw i realize that i am taking the dangerous and on the cusp challop view that a live and a DMB song are not good, but i had never heard either one before and wow

What Would You Say
Jimi Thing
Ants Marching
Satellite
Too Much
So Much To Say
Tripping Billies
Don't Drink The Water

^^^ much as i'd like to i can't really hate on any of these, hooky as hell (although his vocal stylings almost sink "Satellite") and fuck man, i owned the CDs like a million other people. Like it or not, Under The Table And Dreaming is going to be in fucktons of "classic album" canon lists ten years from now if it's not already. Granted, the lows are really low, and they overreach when they try to make Serious Statements. I let "Don't Drink The Water" in because it's just so magnificently goofy. But ehhh, none of those up there are so bad and hated, for me.

I will admit that I would race to change the channel on "Ants Marching" but I'll still give it credit for being very well-constructed.
