to get away from the discussions and focus on music, please suggest more stuff that's like "watching the end of a party through smoke"

jaxon, Sunday, 27 March 2011 04:31 (fourteen years ago)

jerimih's second album is fantastic. thanking u.

jaxon, Sunday, 27 March 2011 04:31 (fourteen years ago)

since the Weeknd sorta flirt across hip hop, here's hip hop sorta flirting across r'n'b and is exactly the mood and feel i'm going for.

the frank ocean album wasn't really what i was expecting. i thought it was all gonna be indie samples or something. overall it was just ok, but kinda too damn emo. the hotel california song was awful. i think this was the best track on the album

That Meshell track is jawdropping. I never got around to Devil's Halo, will have to correct that.

Rap not R&B, but I think it fits the mood:

"Single" was also produced by 40, the Drake associate from Toronto that people initially speculated was behind The Weeknd fyi

the production on that track is amazing

you think? some woozy (flanged?) synths and super dry drums in a simple midtempo pattern always sounded kinda lazy and nothing to me.

corkslovetoscrew (some dude), Monday, 28 March 2011 18:40 (fourteen years ago)

feeling the ty and kory song. just downloaded the mixtape. is good?

jaxon, Monday, 28 March 2011 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

this bei maejor mixtape: http://www.soulculture.co.uk/blogs/music-blog/newmusic/bei-maejor-upside-down-mixtape-freeload/

and (i think) connected, this jhene aiko mixtape: http://jheneaiko.com/

pretty much exactly the same sort of mood...think bei maejor's done work with the drake producers that the weeknd were actually compared to by most people originally (and idk if he did jhene aiko's mixtape but he's worked with her before too)

lex pretend, Monday, 28 March 2011 19:45 (fourteen years ago)

also this thread's getting a bit youtube heavy, if i don't return to it that's the reason

you think? some woozy (flanged?) synths and super dry drums in a simple midtempo pattern always sounded kinda lazy and nothing to me.

woozy and minimal in just the right way imo. no flanger, but most of the synths are reversed, and i like that descending pitch-bent sound.

maybe "amazing" is overstating it but i think it's effective.

adult music person (Jordan), Monday, 28 March 2011 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of "Russian Roulette" TBH, I just think it's an interesting point of comparison because the music's totally in the Weeknd vein and thematically it's sorta there as well, the only difference is that it's a power-ballad.

i was thinking about it but it may have to wait until after i get back from my ~romantic minibreak this weekend

whenever i've slagged him off to people in person the defences have ranged from "but he's so nice" to "he's really fit", i don't doubt the former and i don't dispute the latter but his entire thing is also SUCH BULLSHIT

also my contempt for his whole #sadboy thing knows noooooo booooounds at all, such depths of contempt i have never felt before

lex pretend, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 17:53 (twelve years ago)

however i also agree w/shipz about the purposes of this thread so

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZBR2cFJoJg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEz1GNUGfwY

these two have been pretty consensus this year on the r&b thread i think

lex pretend, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 17:55 (twelve years ago)

also my contempt for his whole #sadboy thing knows noooooo booooounds at all, such depths of contempt i have never felt before

i don't even really think of him as part of this aesthetic, even though he's associated with main attrakionz, shlohmo, etc. his productions are a lot more technicolor.

and i don't think he's connected with a really great singer or a really great song yet, but i'm sure he will at some point. he's a talented producer who can make instrumentals that totally stand on their own, and seems to be in the process of moving toward working with more vocalists as a producer-for-hire (which is a super common trajectory these days).
