What happens when you take six sexy Indonesians, dress them up like it's 1973, and let them form a band? You get White Shoes & The Couples Company.

I ended up with a copy of their first cd back in 2007 when it was reissued on Minty Fresh (originally from 2005) and I've kept tabs on them since, but it's just over the last few days that I've become obsessed with their look, their sound, their personality and completely baffled as to why their presence in the west is virtually non-existent (though it appears they have visited the US west coast and played shows/radio).

The second release Album Vakansi came out last October and, if I had my 2010 favorites list to do over again, it might break into the top ten. It's just such indulgent listening, completely perfected down to the last detail. RIYL Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 via Belle and Sebastian

Still no videos for anything from Album Vakansi, but here's one for the song "Tentang Cita" from the first album:

I absolutely loved the album with Tentang Cita on. I guess early Cardigans would be a pretty obvious reference point - it's all so immaculately crafted, bouncy and fun. I didn't know there was another out last year - i'll have to invest.

I can't find a single non-Asian retailer carrying the second album, so I'm making do with mp3s for now.

seven months pass...

btw, Minty Fresh has released it (the newer one) for North America, but so far it's digital-only.

I'm from Indonesia and I can't stand how this band present themselves. 70's fashion, really? So gimmicky and "packaged."
