boxcubed (boxcubed), Thursday, 29 August 2002 05:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish you'd write about classic rock for Pitchfork, the stuff you wrote on Styx and "Lay Lady Lay" was really funny and on target.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 29 August 2002 05:54 (twenty-three years ago)

aren't ZZ Top classic rock? try something of theirs. if you can like them then you can like anything. you will be rock!

phil turnbull (philT), Thursday, 29 August 2002 06:03 (twenty-three years ago)

simon trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 29 August 2002 06:07 (twenty-three years ago)

im the same, sometimes these rock people are like moonmen. but it makes picking what rock i like so much easier and stringless. i hadn't even heard of ironic appreciation until i started listening to rock

boxcubed (boxcubed), Thursday, 29 August 2002 06:29 (twenty-three years ago)

chew gum. Lift both your feet off the ground at the same time, while playing a guitar and standing by a drumkit or something.

spectra, Thursday, 29 August 2002 06:40 (twenty-three years ago)

see what i mean? moonmen.

boxcubed (boxcubed), Thursday, 29 August 2002 06:44 (twenty-three years ago)

simon trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 29 August 2002 10:04 (twenty-three years ago)

well you were more rock then!! everyone gets less rock as they get older!! except status quo obv!! so listen to status quo!!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 29 August 2002 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Well maybe first you should try out some of those bands that sit somewhere betwixt the whole "rock"/"funk" thing -- early '70s Funkadelic, Sly & the Family Stone, Santana's first three albums (don't laugh -- everyone goes on about Carlos' guitar but their percussion is underrated), things like that. Then just screw around and download various random stuff by Dick Dale and the Buzzcocks and New Order. And while this does seem like the advice of someone who wishes severe mental trauma on you, maybe you could try listening to the local "classic rock" station more often (though I'd suggest later in the afternoon because if my local station is any indication their morning DJs are a bunch of frat-whitey cockfarmers). Just remember: while listening to more rock is no problem whatsoever, "being" more rock is potentially dangerous and can lead to bad hair, disco hatred and IROC ownership. If you find yourself with a Hagar-era Van Halen album in your collection it may be time to step away and go for a two-month Wu Tang-immersion program.

I also have a weird feeling you might like Devo. I might be wrong though.

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 29 August 2002 12:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh oh oh and Electric Light Orchestra

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 29 August 2002 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

if hating "sail away" is your motivation, godspeed

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 29 August 2002 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

ELO = Elephant 6 prog trap. Not gonna work.

I don't think the problem is you're not rock enough as you're too anti-rock. To that end, stuff like Styx & Linkin Park are things that should be kept in the closet and NEVER ADMITTED TO EVER.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 29 August 2002 13:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Soon Neil Young's Sail Away will be too much rock for ya.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 29 August 2002 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Therefore, time for you to get into the Sisters of Mercy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 August 2002 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Grow your hair long and make snide remarks about women. They probably only like whatever their boyfriend does. If someone disagrees with your taste he's a fucking asshole who doesn't know how to feel it.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 29 August 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

sterling's nailed it closest so far.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 29 August 2002 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, be more new wave, it's so much better.

New Wave to the Grave (Arthur), Thursday, 29 August 2002 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

"nate yr giving him advice on how to be more "rock" and you used the word "betwixt"?"

But I used the word "cockfarmer"! I thought it would balance out!

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 29 August 2002 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

oh and grow a mullet cause mullets are for those that know how to rock.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 29 August 2002 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

, Friday, 30 August 2002 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

What is this Sail Away song you are talking about. The only song anmed Sail Away i can remember is the Enya one

Zac, The Black Power Ranger (vicc13), Friday, 30 August 2002 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Ethan, to be rock, follow this trail: listen to "Sail Away", love it, buy Styx's greatest hits, love it for the most part, see Styx in concert, not that great, but still sing along to "Sail Away", accidentally hear Zep's "Misty Mountain Hop", realize it's better than "Sail Away", buy a Zep t-shirt, proclaim Zep is the ultimate band to ever exist, trade in Styx greatest hits for used copy Jimmy Page solo record, hate it, succumb to listening to a bunch of lame indie bands, think that the only good stuff was the old 70s blues-based heavy rock but nobody makes it anymore so you just listen to Spoon now but if there's one thing you know it's that Styx sucks. Disco too.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 30 August 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i heart dominique.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 30 August 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn, that was amazing!

Clarke B., Friday, 30 August 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Zac the song is "COME Sail Away" by legendary Chicago 70s supergroup Styx. I pity the fool who doesn't like "Come Sail Away."
