The Platters

Not sure how these don't have a thread yet. I find their music so completely amazing. I've just been listening to a Greatest Hits I found on Spotify but every track is just impeccably made, just these sheer walls of emotion.

Do you like the Platters? And are there other records of theirs beyond me just listening to a hits compilation?

Love the platters. Great Pretender is one of my all time faves.

From 67-68 is surprisingly tough, even a bit 'northern' - with some schlock though

I know and enjoy "Great Pretender" but don't really know much more. Always assumed that much of their catalogue ould be too schlocky for some reason.

Three Times, Taiwanese arthouse movie in 3 segments, the only segment I like introduced me to the Platters. 'They asked me how I knew my true love was true? I of course replied: something here inside cannot be denied.'

my dad always carried cassette tapes of The Platters and The Tams when we would go on family vacations in the 80s. i very much enjoyed them both.

a lot of it is sort of cheesey, but i dunno, the greatest hits is almost universally classic. this shit is like gilt edged wistful pop music. the emotional whack off the tracks is just undeniable.

eleven months pass...

Especially goes for Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, especially when dropped into The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant.

Its like a template for using a pop song in film.

twelve years pass...

Got a CD of this at a library sale a few weeks ago:

Came out in '68. I haven't looked at the personnel, so I don't know how many people are left from the '50s version, but it's a bit like that thread someone started of '60s and '70s people trying to keep up with the '80s. Pretty good, including the Jackie Wilson cover, but you're aware of the disconnect.
