Stealth Bummers: songs you thought were cheerful but aren't

This may be the worst possible example of what I'm talking about, but the melancholy of Super Trooper totally escaped me until last week.
Now it's totally bumming me out.
Not sure how I missed it for so long, it's totally on the surface and I've probably heard it a million times.

Any better examples of songs that just seem like a bit of goofy fun but suddenly reveal themselves to you as total downers?

the supremes to thread, starting with "the happening"

One day you're up
When you turn around
You find your world is tumbling down
It happened to me and it can happen to you
I was sure, I felt secure
Until love took a detour, yeah!
Riding high on the top of the world it happened
Suddenly it just happened
I saw my dreams torn apart
When love walked away from my heart
And when you lose a precious love you need to guide you
Something happens inside you, the happening

Elvis Costello seems to do this a lot - particularly in "Veronica" which seems all bouncy and energetic but is actually about aging and losing identity to alzheimers. and he does it a little less stealthily in "Other Side of Summer" which is all negatives but done as a lilting Beach Boys pastiche.

There's a zillion billion of these. One big one is Counting Flowers On The Wall by The Statler Brothers

REM, "The One I Love"

Baby Bird, "You're Gorgeous"

Outkast - "Hey Ya"

'lol u stuck with me now watch this ass expand, joeks on u' (DJP), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

Stealth bummers is pretty much the best way to describe Steely Dan.

A fair number of Randy Newman songs: “Sail Away,” “Wedding in Cherokee Country,” etc.

Heavenly - "Hearts & Crosses"

this one hits especially hard because it's the absolute peak of the band's bouncy, infectious girl group sound, with a killer organ line and...lyrics about date rape. I almost feel guilty for enjoying it so much.

the song that follows it, "Atta Girl", deals with the same subject matter, but it's darker sounding and ends on a triumphant note. come to think of it, maybe that's their best song. or maybe it's "Tool". I can't do this...

Cidinho & Doca - rap das armas

Everybody dances cheerfully to this one whenever they play it on clubs and yet few people know the song is about murder in the favelas and the catchy 'parapapapa's of the chorus is not really anthemic nonsense but a machine gun onomatopeia. Same thing could be said about M.I.A.'s 'Paper planes' actually.

Postal Service - District Sleeps Alone Tonight

Sounds like unashamed giddy electropop but is actually about looking back on broken relationships. Also in a similar note: Stars - Heart and maybe every postal service song ever but I don't know for sure.

Supertramp - It's Raining Again

'Care of Cell 44' although she is getting out of jail soon!

I think "the one i love" is more of just an outright bummer.

I think "the one i love" is more of just an outright bummer

but lots of ppl took it as a positive love song based purely on the first two lines

the music isn't particularly cheerful either, though.

i mean, i accept that people made that mistaken assumption, but i dont think rem wrapped a shineshiny glittery pop song around their bitter lament.

maybe obvious too, but a lot of Two-Tone/British ska revival stuff is like this - early Specials, English Beat, even Madness all have this manic teenage energy and spazziness - but even greyer and glummer and lonelier, and funnier, than a lot of punk too.
