love that Eels track

I'd contribute but the only thing that springs to mind is Ash's "Numbskull," which is definitely neither tasty nor tasteful.

Need a ruling on this: does instrumental hip-hop qualify for this thread?

ka£ka (NickB), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 14:31 (fourteen years ago)

nope

the use of the word tasteful i guess is to filter out the mass of nu-metal bands that dropped in scratch sections, or are they disqualified under the 'no rap' rule ?

mark e, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 14:42 (fourteen years ago)

probably some beck songs

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

Re nu-metal: Def the former. I wouldn't exactly call DJ Lethal's scratch solo at the end of "Faith" tasteful by any stretch of the imagination.

Incubus's DJ was pretty much on his game though. Gonna need to go into the vault and find a representative track

Whale's "Pay For Me" is such a monster groove and that video is a ws classic

Sugar Ray - "Fly"

:(

suxv (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 14:56 (fourteen years ago)

tasteful and tasty!

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 14:57 (fourteen years ago)

I was thinking the "tasteful" was also being used to weed out all those pop songs that just used record scratching as a silly sound effect/percussive sound. Can't think of any specific examples but I keep thinking of stuff like LFO, Sugar Ray, and Hanson.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

not a hit, but Modest Mouse - Heart Cooks Brain (guest DJ KO)

mizzell, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 15:01 (fourteen years ago)

Though I'm not sure how tasteful one would consisder this, or if anyone would oncsider it a hit, but it retains a special place in my heart:

late 80s was full of such treats (Age of Chance of course), but struggling with 90s.

I mean, yeah, that's def "Dust Brothers syndrome." You can hear it on that Rolling Stones song they produced too!

Smash Mouth's "All Star" defines the genre I think.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 15:03 (fourteen years ago)

I feel like their greatest hits albums would be worth checking out, in general. I haven't heard anything of theirs since 2004 though.

I love this - "Mmmbop" *two step beat* *record scratch*

frogbs, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 15:34 (fourteen years ago)

Fuck do I want "tasteful" record scratching in an alterna-hit for

da croupier, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah "90s alterna-hits" and "tasteful" are not really two phrases you'd expect to see together.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

Producer David Kahne, I question your taste in treating turntablism like a mere sound-effect to be utilized like so much spice

da croupier, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 15:43 (fourteen years ago)

Sublime to thread
