Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 18:13 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, I did give them the botd when they did "Belfast Child", heart in the right place, bit of an epic, not exactly Boheemsrapsdy, but hey...

Now, if you'd optioned their cover of "Sign of the Times", hmmm....

So, Zombs it is.

Mark G, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 18:13 (fourteen years ago)

The Simple Minds ep Belfast Child came from also included

so that might just give the edge to Simple Minds in this poll

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

in what direction?

Mark G, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 18:16 (fourteen years ago)

winning this poll for being shittest

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 18:16 (fourteen years ago)

Zombie is at least funny. Simple Minds also had a way to fall (Lovesong, I Travel, New Gold Dream, even Up On The Catwalk...to this?), Cranberries were fairly awful on record from the off. (I saw them live in '91 and thought they were OK).

So, BC.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

zombie is uplifiting and cool

ive nvr heard of the simple minds or the other song so ill abstain

probably would vote 4 this tho:

Boney M - "Belfast" > Simple Minds - "Belfast Child" > U2 - "Sunday Bloody Sunday" >>>>> Cranberries - "Zombie"

(excluded from special edition Rubbish Songs abt the Troubles rundown for actually being good or at least not having terrible lyrics, in the first instance by virtue of being an instrumental: Orbital - "Belfast" and SLF - "Alternative Ulster")

dimension hatris (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 19:51 (fourteen years ago)

Simple Minds - "Belfast Child" > U2 - "Sunday Bloody Sunday"

y'wot?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

I did hesitate before that one because it's basically not true except that I can't stand U2 at all

dimension hatris (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 20:15 (fourteen years ago)

Zombie is fucking hideous in a way rarely achieved in music. Belfast Child is just predictably sappy.

2) Dolores O’Riordan. Her smug conceit masquerading as concern for all mankind.

LOL @ this. Her attempts to dance in the Salvation video may be some of the smuggest movements made by humans.

“It was a fearful night of December 8th/He was returning home from the studio late/He had perceptively known that it wouldn’t be nice/Because in 1980 he paid the price…With a Smith & Wesson 38/John Lennon’s life was no longer a debate.”

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

CORRECTION: Zombie is fucking hideous in a way rarely achieved in music… except by the Cranberries themselves in songs like I Shot John Lennon, Bosnia, etc.

It was a tragic day when a lovely lass
Who went by the name of Mama Cass
Stopped off at the corner store to buy
a tasty ham sandwich and an order of fries

Deep into the sandwhich she did bite
And only then did she get a fright
She huffed and puffed and then she choked
And only then the shop assistant spoke

"I just killed Mama Cass", he said,
"I just killed Mama Cass."
What a sad and sorry and sickening sandwich
It's so terrible that life's such a bitch

Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah...
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah...

I would like to state my vision,
Life was so unfair.
We live in our secure surroundings,
And people die out there.

Bosnia was so unkind.
Sarajevo changed my mind.
And we all call out in despair.
All the love we need isn't there.
And we all sing songs in our room.
Sarajevo erects another doom.

Sarajevo, Sarajevo, Sarajevo, Sarajevo.
Bosnia was so unkind.
Sarajevo, Sarajevo, Saraje-
Bosnia was so unkind.

Sure things would change if we really wanted them to.
No fear for children anymore.
There are babies in their beds,
Terror in their heads,
Love for the love of life.

When do the saints go marching in? [X4]
Walk on tip toe...

the most classic Cranberries thread on ilx: "You don't get it, do you? My wife is Bono. She is not Larry." aka Dolores from The Cranberries and her pisshead husband vs their beleaguered nanny

"'Sunday Bloody Sunday'. What a great song. It really encapsulates the frustration of a Sunday, doesn't it? You wake up in the morning, you've got to read all the Sunday papers, the kids are running round, you've got to mow the lawn, wash the car, and you think "Sunday, bloody Sunday!"

I'm pretty sure that they changed the space-time continuum and actually shot John Lennon with bullets full of suck.

one year passes...

lol this thread ... i missed it when it was active, but i would've voted for Simple Minds. half b/c "belfast child" is awful on so many levels (not the least in its cheap and bombastic sentimentality) but b/c it's evidence of how far Simple Minds fell. this song was the bloody splat on the sidewalk after they dove headlong into U2-esque pomposity.

"zombie" was merely a bad song from a band that was kinda-OK at best.
