i feel like i've heard it used as a euphemism for blowing your mind too, but maybe i'm just conflating it with "flip your wig" and/or "get your wig pushed back"

usually 'get your wig split' reads way more sinister and = shot imo

'split your wig' is less sinister to me and maybe just = getting hit

Endless thread possibilities discussing origins of ubiquitous 90s hip hop phrases - "flip the script," "word is bond," "baby pa," "peace to all the gods and the earths" (someone actually explained that one to me - it means 'thanks mom and dad' - :)), etc. I know what these mean, but always been curious about where a lot of this language developed. I was reading an August Wilson play recently, set in the 50s, and was surprised to see a lot of slang I always associated with hip hop ('you better ask somebody,' etc). There are probably reams about this very thing, but it's likely some dry grad school type shit.

gods & earths is 5%er terminology it just means men & women who are 5%ers ('nation of gods & earths')

wig / cap push back means getting shot up in almost every interpretation iirc? wig split i can see also being getting smacked in the head tho

xp I heard the 5% thing but I thought it was specifically mother and father. Father is the God, mother is the Earth. See "Can It All Be So Simple" when Rae (or was it Ghost? I can't remember while music is playing) is ready to give up but then "seeks the old Earth" who gives him some life lessons, right?

First time I ever heard the phrase was when Brand Nubian went all 5% on their second album.
