1001 Songs We Must Poll Before ILM Dies - the pre-40s selections

Planning to do the entire book, starting off with a rather huge bunch from the very first part of the recorded popular music era. Will narrow down the 40s to one decade, 50-54 to one half-decade, and then every year from 1955 separately. So, yes, this may take some time.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 31 March 2011 01:37 (fourteen years ago)

"Strange Fruit" just ahead of "Minnie The Moocher" here.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 31 March 2011 01:40 (fourteen years ago)

(Btw, the book in question is of course "1001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die")

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 31 March 2011 01:40 (fourteen years ago)

yeah so this is impossible

broke my o_O face o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 31 March 2011 15:37 (fourteen years ago)

Robert Johnson: Hellhound On my Trail

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Thursday, 31 March 2011 16:43 (fourteen years ago)

the Hot Fives and the Hot Sevens are all-time favorites.

where's duke ellington?

nicky lo-fi, Thursday, 31 March 2011 16:49 (fourteen years ago)

one more for St. James Infirmary

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 31 March 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

Hot Fives, although I would have rather voted for "West End Blues" or "Potato Head Blues."

Jazzbo, Thursday, 31 March 2011 17:35 (fourteen years ago)

Ditto Hot Fives, but yeah, seems almost random that "St. James" is in there rather than the two you mentioned.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Thursday, 31 March 2011 17:49 (fourteen years ago)

where's duke ellington?

My guess is that he'll be all over the 40s list.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Thursday, 31 March 2011 17:50 (fourteen years ago)

Actually not, which may well be the most glaring example of somebody lacking in the entire book. (I don't think Glen Miller is in there either though. Maybe the author simply didn't like big band jazz? Strange to leave them out anyway, in favour of a zillion French, Latin American and Italian entries that nobody outside those countries have heard)

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 31 March 2011 20:20 (fourteen years ago)

sol hoopii song should have been 'i like you'

colby, Thursday, 31 March 2011 20:21 (fourteen years ago)

The whole of the pre-40s get just this? Surely each year should have its own year.

On the other hand polls are for people with autism

colby, Thursday, 31 March 2011 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

The whole of the pre-40s get just this? Surely each year should have its own year.

I believe few years pre-40s have much more that one or two songs in the book.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 31 March 2011 20:27 (fourteen years ago)

I believe you are mistaken

colby, Thursday, 31 March 2011 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

Oh you are talking about a particular book? In that case i retract my statement, but feel disappointed in this book whatever it might be

colby, Thursday, 31 March 2011 20:29 (fourteen years ago)

really impossible but i voted caruso bc he deserves a vote and i could see him getting overlooked in a poll like this

Mordy, Thursday, 31 March 2011 20:33 (fourteen years ago)

Yes, it is a book, named "1001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die". There is a link to it as a Spotify Playlist here

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 31 March 2011 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Sunday, 3 April 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

mordy totally otm, voted bessie smith on the same grounds

symsymsym, Sunday, 3 April 2011 23:09 (fourteen years ago)

Btw. reading the preface I found the most likely reason for leaving out Duke Ellington and Glen Miller: The authors have decided to include only tracks with vocals. So no jazz, no "Apache", no "Albatross", but a handful of dance tracs with sampled lyrics have been included.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 3 April 2011 23:21 (fourteen years ago)

no instrumental jazz, I mean. Surely there's a lot of Billie Holiday, for instance.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 3 April 2011 23:21 (fourteen years ago)

songs without vocals are the worst

symsymsym, Monday, 4 April 2011 00:12 (fourteen years ago)

damn this is hard.

I love my puppy -- and she loves me! (Viceroy), Monday, 4 April 2011 01:35 (fourteen years ago)

So hard. Going with "Strange Fruit", in the end.

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 4 April 2011 01:44 (fourteen years ago)

St. James Infirmary followed by Billie Holiday and Robert Johnson.

Noticeable omissions: Duke Ellington, Blind Willie Johnson, Edith Piaf.

voting Lydia Mendoza.

the sol hoopii shoulda been "farewell blues: (instrumental though) and, imo, the calloway shoulda been "is that religion?"

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 4 April 2011 08:49 (fourteen years ago)

Piaf will come later, Moka.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Monday, 4 April 2011 09:17 (fourteen years ago)

― You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro)

"It don't mean a thing (if it ain't got that swing)" is one of the most popular songs of the era and has vocals.

Moka, Monday, 4 April 2011 10:37 (fourteen years ago)

Only including tracks with vocals is ridiculous btw. Leaves out many gems, let alone whole genres (surf, post-rock, techno, classical...) I mean how can you make a list like this while ignoring songs like 'rumble', 'wipe out', 'misirlou', 'sandstorm', 'children' or even John Williams' Imperial March.

Moka, Monday, 4 April 2011 10:47 (fourteen years ago)

song implies singing.

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 4 April 2011 17:53 (fourteen years ago)

ILM needs to write a companion piece, 1001 Instrumental Tracks to Hear Before You Die.

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 4 April 2011 17:54 (fourteen years ago)

song implies singing.

Moreso than "implies"; you cannot have a song without lyrics. Obviously an instrumental piece is music but it is not a song.

whelping at his sandpapery best (DJP), Monday, 4 April 2011 18:02 (fourteen years ago)

well actually scratch that; you can have a lyricalless song but it is still performed by voice

whelping at his sandpapery best (DJP), Monday, 4 April 2011 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

where does 'talking' steel guitar fit in?

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Monday, 4 April 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

huh, 58 votes and not one of them was for Robert Johnson.

administratieve blunder (unregistered), Monday, 4 April 2011 23:15 (fourteen years ago)

oops

administratieve blunder (unregistered), Monday, 4 April 2011 23:16 (fourteen years ago)

in ilx's defense, it was a hard poll!

symsymsym, Monday, 4 April 2011 23:17 (fourteen years ago)

i know this poll is based off of a book but every time i read this thread title i get the feeling that geir knows something that we don't

Sittin' Fran (donna rouge), Monday, 4 April 2011 23:21 (fourteen years ago)

yes, it's a little thing called melody...

I love my puppy -- and she loves me! (Viceroy), Monday, 4 April 2011 23:41 (fourteen years ago)

Must say I am a bit surprised by the winner here. But, well, OK.....

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 00:04 (fourteen years ago)

Over The Rainbow is soooo cheeseball...

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 01:50 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah it's cheeseball but I would've been happy to vote for it. I had a toy as a baby that played the song over and over again, can't deny its lull influence on my life.

Moka, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 10:21 (fourteen years ago)

Only one for Bing? Shame.

Pop is superior to all other genres (DL), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 10:24 (fourteen years ago)

Hopefully Bing will get more in the 40s poll. He has at least gotten my vote there.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 10:48 (fourteen years ago)

I'm the Bing voter. figured he might need it. expected Strange Fruit to take it.
