Has Alex Turner ever written a clunker of a lyric?.........

Listening to the soundtrack to 'Submarine' and can't help but admire his way with a word or two -

''Your waitress was miserable
And so was your food
If you're gonna try and walk on water
Make sure you wear your comfortable shoes''

Careful. These guys aren't liked much around here.

He's written quite a few clunkers, but I like him well enough. Haven't heard this new thing yet though.

I was all "Who even is this guy?" -- then I checked and went "Yeah, Alfred said that for a reason."

Our old pal Stewart Osborne never recovered from his shame at buying that record and was never heard from again.

the new single is better than anything since the second AMs album

I saw them live last year promoting the requisite Terrible Third Album. I still have small hopes for them.

i saw them live promoting Pretty Good Second Album. it was a fun show.

their QOTSA phase has been regrettable tho

See I liked that album better than the second, on the whole (though #2 had higher highs). Homme's meaty production was a good fit.

I don't think he has, no. Nearest I can think is something like 'Fluorescent Adolescent' where he's not bringing anything new or particularly insightful, but even that's hardly a clunker. I can't think of anyone better at what he does. Shame I'm just not interested in that kind of music anymore really, nor feel a need for lyrics at all hardly. His might make a terrific oeuvre to rediscover one day maybe.

Part of his charm is that it's always verging on clunkerdom
i.e. "I heard the news that you're planning / to shoot me out of a cannon" heh heh

Odult Ariented Rock (Ówen P.), Thursday, 31 March 2011 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

arguably most importantly, he's gotten progressively less cute imo

Fake Tales of San Francisco has a lot of potential but ends up being as deep as it's song title.

J0rdan otm.

also "Fluorescent Adolescent" isn't about the lyrics -- it's about how nimbly he recites them.

it's actually a racially insensitive commentary about how all fry-chefs are named jesus

Good point, he's a joy to listen to there. A lot of his stuff's like that, pirouetting through tonguetwisters. I never did read Reynolds' Monkeys/Dizzee/hip-hop analysis, but I guess that must be what he was getting at.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 31 March 2011 22:16 (fourteen years ago)

think it's a bit weird the turner & the monkeys have sort of adopted the classic rock look and sound when 4yrs ago or so they were called a bunch of posers by keith richards

kelpolaris, Thursday, 31 March 2011 22:18 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, what the fuck does the second half of that lyric set have to do with the first? There's a clunker right there.
