It's just denial.

Coxon leaving Blur + Radio 1 scrapping the Evening Session = The onset of the Indie Apocalypse!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 29 August 2002 12:32 (twenty-three years ago)

But what are they planning to replace Lamacq with?

Yet another alterno-indie Radio 1 venture comes a-crashing to the ground while Peel just carries on into infinity. Has the time come to maybe put the old boy out to pasture? In these confused post-everything times, his programme does not serve the same purpose/have the same impact it perhaps did a decade and a half or so ago. Or has he become more like some kind of untouchable BBC version of the Queen Mother and cannot be axed?

Hi Matt,

Wow the Beeb is scrapping the Evening Session? I'm surprised...well maybe not, i suppose the rationale is that "hey, they've got 6music now, bring on the techno from the E.S. timeslot".

Derek Dalek (Derek Dalek), Thursday, 29 August 2002 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to see Mary Anne Hobbs moved into the Evening Sesh slot.

Bugger all chance of that though... I suspect it will still be broadly 'alternative' in its nature.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 29 August 2002 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Will they keep that slot "indie' though. I remember when they tossed Andy Kershaw out of his late evening slot, they replaced him with Seb Fontaine. Who knows what they'll do.

also considering that BBC have now launched digital channel 1X to cater for all the hip hop, r'n b/garage/anything that can be lazily tagged as urban black music this will no doubt free the main Radio 1 playlist up for even more lukewarm Top 40 filth from Coldplay et al - perhaps...

Wow, the British BET, but will it show pornos too?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 1 September 2002 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope thye do that inastead Noodles?

But it's the BBC (pblic service broadcasting) so no chance of that.

It's a 'broader based music show' = Steve & Jo reunited for two hour MXPX/Macy Gray extravaganza. I shudder.
