So, pretty much without fail, whenever I hear a song from 1988 i get mad nostalgia and melancholy and a rush of emotion. I was eight and just got MTV and pretty much watched it every single day. To this day, whenever I hear any song that was released a single that year, it makes me feel all gooey and weird.
Top offenders:George Michael - "Father Figure"Rod Stewart - "Forever Young"Escape Club - "Wild Wild West"Traveling Wilburys - "Handle With Care"Johnny Hates Jazz - "Shattered Dreams"
Is this unique to me, or do you have a year like this in your life. I don't think you can play me a single song released in 1988 that I wouldn't enhoy on some level.

'forever young' does that to me, too. similar feelings don't pop up again till mid-90s 'alt'/pop-rock and top40 r&b. 'gooey and weird' fits my current relationship to gin blossoms, counting crows, goo goo dolls :/

i'm not sure if i really have a year that works like this for me, but i think maybe the closest to it is 1993. maybe '87 second that.

83/84 is probably my goosebumpiest era, when I really started listening to the radio and listening to records at my friend's house. My parents were still really churchy people at that point and wouldn't let me buy secular music, so I had to steal away to listen to Van Halen and Madonna and Phil Collins and Prince. And once I crossed over, I crossed over hard and was into EVERYTHING. Electro, metal, classic rock, rap, and run of the mill pop.
Wang Chung's "Dance Hall Days," for example, is a song I hold up high on a crazy pedestal when other people just shrug and say "that's an okay song."

1988, and the end of 1987, for me too. I was 5/6, and would get up early on Saturday mornings to watch video clips with my older sister. Especially:
- all George Michael singles from Faith- all INXS singles from Kick- Pet Shop Boys "Always On My Mind"- Fine Young Cannibals "She Drives Me Crazy"- Maxi Priest - "Wild Word"- Terence Trent D'arby "Sign Your Name"- Yazz, "The Only Way Is Up"
Definitely "Handle Me With Care" and "Wild Wild West" too.

My parents really like Dave Matthews, so pretty much any summer since 95 has "#41" and "Crash Into Me" sending me that instant nostalgic for carefree 90s summers. I was only 8 in 95...

nostalgic feeling*
My kind of thread by the way- its why I'm so into 90s music, though I listened to none of my favorites at the time. I get the same feeling listening to "Today" by Smashing Pumpkins.

Nostalgia is why. I keep leaving out sections of sentences, I apologize.

Dance hits from 91, which I adore now but thought were shit at the time, aged 12/13.

Oh man. Fuckin 89 to be sure. "No Control" by Bad Religion, NOFX's "S&M Airlines", White Zombie's "Make Them Die Slowly" came out then...KMFDM's "UAIOE", and of course speaking of industrial music, I was the first kid on the playground to have "Pretty Hate Machine." I camped out for that shit. And let's not forget those first Anal Cunt 7"s.

For real, I would have been 10 for most of that year:

This basically coincides with the end of elementary school and the beginning of middle school, and being allowed to hang out with my friends at the mall and ice rink on weekend nights.

I have two auto-goosebump years: 1972 (mostly 10 years old) and 1979 (mostly 17).
― mike t-diva, Monday, 4 April 2011 09:23 (fourteen years ago)
...and I feel very happy about getting to be 17 in 1979, what luck!

1993-1999. That stretch of 4th to 8th grade had the most impact on music for me. My particular favorite is 1997 because it was the first round of teen pop for my generation, I loved Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys and the dozen or so R&B/Soul groups. I didn't really care for the second round that came in 1999, I felt too old for Britney and Christina and their musical appeal was lost on me.
