Pantera's Cowboys from Hell album from 1990 was described as "groundbreaking" and "blueprint-defining" for the groove metal genre. Tommy Victor of Prong claims that the attitude of groove metal came from Bad Brains.

Geoffrey Himes of The Washington Post described the music in 1998 as a "marriage of hard rock with dance music and hip-hop", and stated about groove metal: "This gives the loud, crunchy guitars a black-flavored dance pulse and gives the wailing vocals the punchy rhythms of rap and funk." Other groove metal bands have incorporated thrash metal, hardcore punk and industrial music.

Ian Christe credits Sepultura's Chaos A.D. and Pantera for creating the death metal-derived music of groove metal and influencing later groups in the genre during the 1990s.

What I find interesting is that when I read "Stairway to Hell" I think that xhuxk would love anything called Groove Metal but when I look at this list, I cannot imagine him liking anything on it save for maybe some Prong stuff. I remember him saying that Static-X sounded like Killing Joke but don't remember if he liked it (I think maybe he didn't, or at least viewed it as non-essential at best).

I would answer C.O.C. in this poll except that the stuff I like most about them is the stuff farthest away from this Groove Metal that the poll attempts to ascertain. Which means I probably shouldn't pick them. The same can be said for Sepultura as well, actually, whose "Beneath The Remains" and "Arise" (and to a degree "Schizophrenia") are favorites above the Groove Metal era of the band. (And actually I probably like those records better than "Animosity" and "Blind," and I hate most of anything after that from them).

Also, it must be said that a lot of these bands are really, really lame.

I will say that anyone who picks Rob Zombie over White Zombie is an idiot. And will actually vote for White Zombie since "La Sexorcisto" is probably the best and most influential of albums touted as Groove Metal and more importantly, I like the grooves a lot more, narrowly beating out Pantera's "Cowboys From Hell" where I like the metal more.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Thursday, 7 April 2011 16:41 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe chuck will change his mind on these bands then and like them!

I think that xhuxk would love anything called Groove Metal but when I look at this list, I cannot imagine him liking anything on it save for maybe some Prong stuff.

Maybe because almost every band in Stairway has more of a groove than almost any band on this list? Sort of like how so-called "funk metal" garbage always sounded like it was dancing with a broomstick up its butt compared to '70s Aerosmith or Nazareth or Black Oak Arkansas or AC/DC etc. That said, you're kind of right and kind of wrong. Yeah, I thought the first Prong EP was okay at the time; thought this one early COC EP Technocracy was okay at the time too, though I haven't heard it in almost a quarter century, Liked the first White Zombie EP Pyscho Head Blowout even more at the time -- it even made my Pazz & Jop ballot, for some stupid reason. And I'm pretty sure I also voted for a P.O.D. single once, "Youth Of the Nation" -- must have been really slow year. And yeah, I also thought the first Static X album was okay -- right, it reminded me of a poor man's Killing Joke, and I think I still have the CD in a box in my closet. I even reviewed the new DevilDriver album for Rhapsody a few weeks back and thought the 16 Horsepower cover on it wasn't completely horrible. (The rest of the album was horrible, but I was fairly diplomatic in my review -- just made it, uh, "descriptive" and didn't cast value judgments much.) Never liked any other P.O.D. song, and thought Prong, White Zombie, Static X, and C.O.C. all got less interesting on subsequent releases, or at least the ones I heard. But I don't hate everything on the list. Definitely don't think any of it is anything like "essential" though. Voted for Static X, since they're the only band on the list I still might own an album by. But I wouldn't be surprised if Corrosion of Conformity were actually better; they're probably the band on list I'd be most interested in revisiting someday.

And oh yeah, my wife's a pretty big Sepultura fan (maybe some Soulfly, too), but I could never get past Cavalera's unlistenable vocals.

xhuxk, Friday, 8 April 2011 01:08 (fourteen years ago)

Oh yeah, she likes Lamb of God a lot, too, come to think of it! I haven't hated what I've heard by them, but it didn't do much for me either.
