Kyuss/Stoner Rock

Its a rapidly growing scene, ignored by mainstream music fans and media. Can anyone recommend me some good stoner rock bands that arent just sabbath soundalikes? The ones who claim to be influenced by SST Records bands like Husker Du,Black Flag etc,stooges,MC5,Psychedelia. I really like the new QOTSA album.and which Kyuss albums are the best?
I want to check out the best albums in this 'scene'.

Tim1, Thursday, 29 August 2002 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Hawkwind!

and Elevator! Screw this Queens of the Stone Age stuff.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 29 August 2002 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Welcome To SKy Valley by Kyuss is probably the best. Blues For The Red SUn isnt far behind. Any of the Kyuss spin off bands are good. Unida,QOTSA,Hermano,Che,Brant Bjork.
If you like more experimental stoner rock try the desert sessions albums(josh homme) and the kyuss albums. Also check out Fatso Jetson.

Cliff, Thursday, 29 August 2002 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

nebula - Charged
Electric wizard - Dope Throne
Hogh On Fire - The Art Of Self-Defense

I'll thnk of some more later...

Queens are OK, Songs For The Deaf is not as good as Rated R though.

Juan Marquez, Thursday, 29 August 2002 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Electric Wizard and The Heads.
QOTSA are great. Its just trendy to slag them off because theyre a bit of a media darling band.

brad, Thursday, 29 August 2002 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Songs For The Deaf is by far and away better than rated r,in my own opinion that is. Its just a more complete album. More varied than R.
The 1st album is still the best though.

Cliff, Thursday, 29 August 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

QOTSA are great. Its just trendy to slag them off because theyre a bit of a media darling band.

And cause they just dont hold up to Elevator.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 29 August 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Oneida. Sonic Youth meets MBV Meets Kyuss/Blue Cheer.
The Heads are like that too.
Nebula are the most obvious (along with Fu Manchu) Stooges/MC5 influenced band.
The 1st QOTSA is as influenced by Can/Neu (josh calls it 'Robot Rock') as it is by sabbath or whatever.
Infact josh claims he never heard a sabbath album until Kyuss split.

They've been saying that about it for ten years now. ;-)

Probably a good thing. As soon as Rolling Stone or whoever cover something Major labels and MTV move in and spoil it. Copy bands and kids who are sheeplike try to sound like the main bands. See Grunge or any 'scene' that ever existed.
To be fair to QOTSA always deny being part of any scene or stoner rock.

Ian, Thursday, 29 August 2002 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

From AMG Elevator:

In the journey away from Elevator to Hell, the band has lost words in its name and gotten back to some of its roots — you can hear everything from Pink Floyd to Black Sabbath here, as well as the basic lo-fi dream grunge leader Rick White indulged in under the name Eric's Trip. The production quality is actually upped a few notches on this release, and that’s not a drawback. — Sean Carruthers

Didnt the original question insist on non sabbath soundalikes?
and pink floyd. URGH. and you slag off QOTSA...
Cue "they dont sound like those bands" comment

col, Thursday, 29 August 2002 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I've already argued this one with Sean elsewhere, and if I havent I will soon.
Cue "they dont sound like those bands" comment
Close, probably comes from a Syd Barret (No Good Trying) cover that sounds like Sabbath on Vague Premonition.
Standard formula for an Elevator review is to mention the words:
Syd Barrett, sludge, guardians, East Coast, Tommy Iommi and loud.
and just connect the dots.

On a side note, Elevator, Elevator To Hell, Elevator Through Hell and Elevator Through are all the same band.
More favorable review for Eerieconsiliation (second lp)
"Elevator To Hell is post-grunge psychedelic blues from former members of Eric's Trip. Take this trip, though, and visit the snapping eyeteeth of the "bad thought" constellation, source of the nightmares for blacklight posters. It's great irony to find Elevator to Hell can take you higher. Music slow and loose but hard on the lo-fi, trippy cool."

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 29 August 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, there's always Blue Cheer. "Vincebus Eruptum" and "Outsideinside" in particular.

That said, I overheard this band called Comets On Fire in a store last week, and was quite enthralled.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 29 August 2002 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

A new band to the scene: The Melvins. Check them out!

gygax!, Thursday, 29 August 2002 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Two of the best SR-bands since Kyuss are certainly COLOUR HAZE and SGT. SUNSHINE. Very jammy and fuzzy grooving bands. Really worth to have them.

KyoteeSun, Thursday, 29 August 2002 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

High on Fire/Sleep
Earth
Kyuss best album is "Welcome to Sky Valley", but their first and last are also great.
Sweet and Honey is great on the Japanese-hand side (Ghost "heavy-rock" spinoff) as was Batoh's Cosmic Invention album.

Shaky Mo Collier, Thursday, 29 August 2002 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

the new comets on fire album is pretty fucking amazing.
the unida song "black woman" smokes in an "allen's wrench" way.
monster magnet's "spine of god".
the new mudhoney album has some nice moments, the last track residing somewhere between hawkwind and the mc5.

vintage:
blue cheer's first two
jpt scare band "sleeping sickness"
silberbart "four times sound razing"

there was a song on one of the "psychedelic flashback" comps by a band called verzerk that was just godhead. ridiculously thick fuzz, sabbathoid riffs that staggered the mind.

your null fame, Thursday, 29 August 2002 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

ugh, Elevator. As a long time Eric's Trip fan, I was absolutely horrified by ETH. I only hope they've improved since then.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 29 August 2002 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

As a long time Eric's Trip fan, I was absolutely horrified by ETH.

Why? The first LP and 12" sounded like a continuation to Eric's Trip. It wasn't until the second album they became sludgey.

There's a bunch of MP3s of Rick White and various RW-related bands (including rare Eric's Trip) here (check "The Great Beyond", click on the album titles).

Vic Funk, Friday, 30 August 2002 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I guess I didn't much like the last Eric's Trip LP either to be honest...

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 30 August 2002 01:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Bad Wizard

Dead Meadow

Pub

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 30 August 2002 05:46 (twenty-three years ago)

dead meadow, musically, are outstanding. the vocals should be cut out with a scalpel and thrown in the bin.

your null fame, Friday, 30 August 2002 11:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Your Null Fame I was with you in re: Dead Meadow's vocals for the first eight listenings or so and then they became kind of endearing. This fits my general theory of vocals: "The more annoying the better, as all non-annoying vocals are ultimately forgettable."

(quiet you clever people, I sing as good as I can)

Dead Meadow's music, yes, some of the best stoner-y stuff out there; not heavy like High on Fire but really out there on all other counts.

J0hn Darn1elle, Friday, 30 August 2002 11:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I guess I didn't much like the last Eric's Trip LP either to be honest...

Does that mean a Forever Again fan? I never understood why people put that one above either of the others. But for me Love Tara is still the best lp.

A decent description Vague Premonition also from AMG starts...

From the ashes of Elevator to Hell and Eric's Trip, Elevator brings back to the top floor the sludge, stoner rock to the '70s and the trippy, inexplicable visions of early Pink Floyd — all on one CD.

Does Masters of Reality count other wise get their album, first one if they ever did a second.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 30 August 2002 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Fu Manchu - complete with big ass vans.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 30 August 2002 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

At last count Masters Of Reality had 4 studio albums. All are great. Fans fave seems to be Sunrise On The Sufferbus. But teh 1st one or western lodge id say are the best.

Masters Of Reality
Sunrise On The Sufferbus
Welcome To The Western Lodge
Deep In The Hole
+ Live At The Viper Room.
Also theres a forthcoming Live Album feat Josh Homme & Nick from QOTSA.Taken from 2001's European Tour.
Its a disgrace that Masters Of reality cant get a record deal in the us. Welcome......came out 3 years late and deep in teh hole STILL hasnt appeared. Meaning costly imports.

Jenkins, Friday, 30 August 2002 13:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Not exactly stoner rock, but the upcoming Isis record, Oceanic, is breathtaking. I'm not a metal fan by any means, but this record is incredible. Imagine metal meets post-rock. Really, really smart, cool shit.

Yancey (ystrickler), Friday, 30 August 2002 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Great. Is stoner rock considered "upcoming" again? Just like in 1993 with Kyuss/Trouble/Monster Magnet/etc? Let's hear it for the theory of eternal recurrence!

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Friday, 30 August 2002 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Masters Of Reality are still at it eh? I just remeber they got played (Domino I think) on an ancient Much Music show called City Limits (might have been on their sisterstation CITY as well) which was sorta a Wedge precursor.

Its upcoming AGAIN? Im just glad CFNY stopped pushing it, probably since the George dude jumped to MM.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 30 August 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I really like the new QOTSA album and everything, but those 'funny' radio bits - ugh! Can we count Clutch as stoner rock? They're giddily great live.

g bear, Friday, 30 August 2002 22:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Domino's a fantastic tune. 1st album - untouchably great. Every song a classic. Sunrise on the Sufferbus - slighter, but Ginger Baker is on it. It's very good too. "Rabbit One" was my favorite song for awhile. Don't know about the 3rd one. Their last album is TERRIBLE though. I can't imagine defending it.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 30 August 2002 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

When I get around to forming my avant-AOR band, I intend to deliver the most annoying vocals ever.

sundar subramanian, Monday, 2 September 2002 04:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Queen of the Stone Age and Kyuss are shit.

If you want real psychadelic rock, get bands like Hawkwind, and several 'Krautrock' groups, such as Can, Neu!, Faust, and Ash Ra Tempel (particularly the latter).

That shit is the shit, man!

(Note: I seriously advise you to take my advice)

Rob McD, Monday, 2 September 2002 07:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's done to flog the new Queens' record, but Jay Babcock put together a pretty good (partial) oral history of Kyuss/QOTSA and stoner rock in this week's LA Weekly.

wl, Monday, 2 September 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

the KHANATE album - sounds like some trouser-rock axl type singing for the swans (early swans, that is, of course, of course) talk to a horse - most horses know lots about rock music

bob snoom, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

earth: "2", "thrones and dominions" "pentastar..."
sleep: "sleep's holy mountain"

cameron, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

also, sunn000))) are quite good, but are basically a (honourably self-confessed) earth tribute band...

goatsnake don't live up to the occult promise of their name....

What about Blue Cheer?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Only two mentions of High on Fire on this thread? Holy hell, The Art of Self-Defense is the most intense stoner rock record ever!!!

Also, when talk comes round to Sleep everyone mentions Jerusalum, but Holy Mountain has been totally kicking my ass! I've yet to hear Volume One...

I learned from this thread that Masters of Reality made more than two albums! Any other opinions on the later stuff?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

(pssst, Nordic... look above again)

are warhorse any good?

cameron, Thursday, 8 May 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Drunk Horse are excellent. Esp. the Prince covers 7" -- "Dirty Mind" was always meant to be a stoner rock song. Sometimes I think I'm the only one who likes Drunk Horse, are there others?

Anyone know when the Unida album is due out?

Perry, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The band havent bought the masters off the label. However i have seen it on various p2p's.

Roy, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The later Masters Of Reality albums are great. Maybe not quite as good as the 1st album. I probably prefer 'Welcome To The Western Lodge' over 'Deep In the Hole'.
Theres a live album from 2001 when Josh & Nick from Qotsa played with Chris Goss. I recommend that.

Roy, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

not mentioned yet

nightstalker - use
natas - delmar
blind dog - last adventures of cp. dog
ufomammut - godlike snake

Always loved kyuss but could never see the appeal of Fu Manchu, except Brant Bjork was briefly in them. Nebula are much better.

New Nebula album is great.

Rob C, Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah Sleep!! word to shakey mo c & mr d, i ♥ that "Holy Mountain" album so much. i don't actually know that much by many bands in this genre, i kind of feel like i like the idea of em better than i'd like the actuality. & maybe i only like the idea of liking the idea of them. or y'know, just figure that 90s/00s bands doing a 60s/70s thing are no way gonna be as good as hawkwind or blue cheer so why bother. but fuck yeah that Sleep record is boss.
Electric Wizard sound pretty great from what i heard, cameron played me some stuff & pointed out the slogan on the CD booklet "legalise Drugs & Murder". which we agreed was wicked badass & any band that would say stuff like that are badass wicked to the maxxx. Altamont & Acid King are good too...mosta the other bands on man's ruin that i've heard are kind of slick-dull tho.

what can be said about it???

eedd, Sunday, 25 January 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

So the Yawning Man comp of their 80s stuff came out on iTunes at some point, I can't find any info about its actual release or anything on the internet anywhere so I don't know when but it's there now, and while the recording quality is incredibly shitty, and a couple songs have what sounds like digital skipping (like it was sourced from a scratched CD?), the songs are so good, it's def. better their their 2000s stuff which is decent enough, but still, and oh my god you should totally check it out

village idiot (dog latin), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 11:53 (fifteen years ago)

I know that Sleep is doing a reunion show in San Francisco this summer. I'm assuming there's other dates but don't care since I won't get to 'em.

Ufomammut rule this thread. Though I haven't yet heard the new album (couldn't even find a section for them at Amoeba, which seemed weird.)

Seemed to me that Nebula never recaptured the majesty that they nailed on their split 12" with Lowrider back, geez, more than ten years ago.

High on Fire are awesome because they sound just like their album covers.

And is Boris too frenetic for stoners or what? Even the record they did with Sunn 0)))?

Matt M., Tuesday, 6 July 2010 15:22 (fifteen years ago)

xp considering they could make several hundred thousand dollars without blinking by reforming properly, if this happens I will be flabbergasted tbh

Penius / JZA (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 15:34 (fifteen years ago)

Since the mention of Colour Haze in 2002, they have released four increasingly exceptional albums - Los Sounds de Krauts (2003), Colour Haze (2005), Tempel (2006) and All (2008). They branched off from Kyuss and developed their own signature sound that is gorgeous and mesmerizing. Highly recommended. I wish they would come to the U.S. and tour.

A lot of bands mentioned here would fit in too: Retro rock itch

Gozu - Locust Season (Small Stone)
Talk about scratching a Kyuss/early QOTSA itch. Definitely inspired by the first QOTSA in particular, but not such a slavish imitation that they don't have their own tricks, a bit heavier and quicker, and a great singer. Damn it hits the spot right now.
