I love "Hello", but I also love "Ballerina Girl". Going for the latter as it will receive few votes otherwise.

And I love DeBarge as well btw, but don't feel like putting them up against Lionel Richie. Both are examples of R&B at its best and most melodic.

Y'all rockers are gonna vote "Stuck on You", but I have to give it up for "You Are". Breezy perfection!

I remember when he was on SNL and Eddie Murphy (who may have been the host -- he was the only member of a current cast to also host) gave an unusually long intro about how Lionel was a musical genius. I smirked, but then Lionel went into "You Are," and I thought, "Yep, Eddie's right."

That said, I went with "All Night Long." Flawless, timeless, vibrant...

I went with the one that charted #24 country. (Apparently he charted #10 country with an Alabama colloboration called "Deep River Woman" four years later, but it's not up there and I don't think I've ever heard it.)

I really like "You Are", reminds me of my little clock radio and those weird years when I wasn't a kid anymore and wasn't a teenager yet.

I think xhuxk means "Stuck On You," which has a country lilt.

"All Night Long (All Night)" is great, especially the 12" version. A perfect example of how a tune can be soft and mellow and still have a wonderful groove.

i don't know why it took me 35 years (give or take a few) to realize what a great song "all night long" is! it's a perfect production, lots of great touches in the rhythm section, the vocal, etc... it's a very MOR synthesis of different rhythmic traditions but it's a seductive synthesis just the same!

"dancing on the ceiling," however, is dreck. it's like he abandoned everything that made him distinctive.

actually it took listening to the instrumental version of "all night long" for me to realize its greatness. not that the vocal is bad, i guess i just needed to pay closer attention to what was going on in the arrangement.

can't slow down is overall a classic, classic album. it was a mainstay in my cassette player when i was a kid and lionel richie was along w/michael jackson my first music hero. unlike MJ i kinda checked out after that period but i recently bought CSD on vinyl for a buck and it's great.

The album version of "Penny Lover" got play on my local A/C station. Corny as fuck, but, god, what a hook. The playing is peak L.A. studio mafia.

Glad to see All Night Long receive proper recognition as one of the towering cultural achievements of the 20th century

"All Night Long" is forever marred for me by teasing a soaring bridge that ultimately doesn't happen. Just three bars of "oh sheet this is about to get next level" before "nope, just back to the chorus again"

Seeing him in the recent "We Are the World" documentary was interesting. I can go for years without thinking about him. Then I remember how ubiquitous he was.

For some people of my age, class, and temperament, Lionel will always be drama-teaching clay Lionel as rendered by the Braille-reading young woman in the "Hello" video but there are more Lionels than that.

At one point he was upside down.
