"Was" his best? Has he died?

His best work has been in the last decade imo.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 11 April 2011 21:08 (fourteen years ago)

Am I the only one round here who liked the BPB does Palace album?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 11 April 2011 21:08 (fourteen years ago)

I hope we can have 20 Will Oldham polls over the next fortnight, it'll be enlightening and great.

cockroach shakespeare (Noodle Vague), Monday, 11 April 2011 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

No I love the Sings Greatest Palace Music album but I love most of everything he's done.

Voted Palace because Viva Last Blues is in my All Time Top 10 Rotation for Life but his BPB-era material, taken as a body of work, is as good as anyone's done in the last ~10 years.

Agreed

viva last blues probably is my fave of his albums these days

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 15:10 (fourteen years ago)

We should have an album poll of BPB/Palace/Oldham albums, I think Viva would put up a good fight for first place.

Future Debts Collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 15:12 (fourteen years ago)

for me Viva Last Blues > all the BPB stuff (tho i did not hear the last one) > everything else.

This and the other Oldham threads of the last few days have spurred me to re-download a bunch of his records. I have a lot of them on vinyl but don't have a great setup for listening to vinyl, so it's been a long time. Just downloaded four full-lengths, an EP, and two comps. This catches me up more or less to where I left off when I stopped listening to Oldham around 2000. Looking forward to refamiliarizing myself with these songs and then getting into the newer stuff.

0 sounds about right for the Oldham material. I mostly hate Arise Therefore and Joya is average at best.

scott pgwp (pgwp), Thursday, 21 April 2011 05:10 (fourteen years ago)

Why do you hate Arise Therefore, scott? It vies as one of my favourites, which goes for my friends who like him as well.

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Thursday, 21 April 2011 05:48 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, and isn't it normally designated as being by 'Palace'? Tho trying to keep track of his designations can be a brow-furrowing task.

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Thursday, 21 April 2011 05:49 (fourteen years ago)

I've seen Joya rebranded as BPB, didn't something similar happen with Arise Therefore - and why?

Beggar On A Beach Of Shite. (PaulTMA), Thursday, 21 April 2011 09:47 (fourteen years ago)

Oh right, didn't realise that. I can't remember my copy of Joya even having anything on to say it was by anyone.

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Thursday, 21 April 2011 10:11 (fourteen years ago)

Actually I think that's the case with Arise Therefore. My copy of Joya is credited to Will Oldham, but I've seen it more recently as a BPB release in shops.

Beggar On A Beach Of Shite. (PaulTMA), Thursday, 21 April 2011 10:20 (fourteen years ago)

O wait, Arise Therefore has a Palace Music sticker on the front of mine.

Beggar On A Beach Of Shite. (PaulTMA), Thursday, 21 April 2011 10:21 (fourteen years ago)

Arise Therefore originally had no artist name on it; I think a Palace Music sticker was placed on the outer wrapper. But later I think he rebranded it as Will Oldham. I thought Joya was always credited to Oldham? I haven't kept up in a while so I might be wrong about this stuff.

Re Arise Therefore - I've always found it to be an inert record. For the most part I think it lacks emotion (and good melodies). The title track and "You Have Cum..." are the exceptions. Overall it feels very numb to me.
