this is hard, cuz in a global success its a bit limited maybe.. and those lines are sooo blurry on whats exactly strict doom.. I like the notion though.

I'd say St Vitus and Candlemass for sure?.. maybe Pentagram? dude, this is tough yo!

See, doom metal is one of those genres that, for me, has largely been improved upon by the students. For instance, I'd much rather listen to Witchcraft than Trouble, and Electric Wizard than Cathedral.

Of course, Sabbath, Saint Vitus and Pentagram are pretty unfuckwithable, obvs (even though Pentagram has released some pretty crummy stuff).

i feel like i need to listen to some doom metal records this year

maybe i'll start with last year's electric wizard, which i do have

markers, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 20:59 (fourteen years ago)

you haven't heard it yet? Get a good bunch of snacks and sit down and listen to it!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

Seconded. That album rules.

I remember reading a Guitar World article from way back that talked about stoner rock. As a sidebar it had a ten-album stoner rock list and the first three were the first Stooges album, Meddle, and Master of Reality...also included St. Vitus and Kyuss (first time I ever came across St. Vitus's name actually)

amphetamine fueled scholar (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 21:10 (fourteen years ago)

stooges & pink floyd? gargh. I used to hate the soulseek stoner rock room when annoying stoned students would come in asking "what is stoner rock, is it pink floyd or phish?" Imagine a world where you had to live with guys & girls like that? Horrible.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 23:06 (fourteen years ago)

I listened to my music on headphones when I lived in the dorms... heh.
but seriously if were in college for any period of time within the last 10 years and you don't know about QOTSA or HoF, I don't know wtf is wrong with you.

I love my puppy -- and she loves me! (Viceroy), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 23:17 (fourteen years ago)

thats a weird line too, the doom/stoner line... I think there is a difference. Stoner metal vs Stoner rock, depending on how much blues is in there..

Barroness, the Sword, Stoner metal; Fu Manchu, Nebula Stoner rock, Sunn o))) Doom as fuck! lol!

SeanWayne, Thursday, 14 April 2011 02:53 (fourteen years ago)

look I'm only going to make this pedantic point once but like the reason there were a big four of thrash is that it was clear there were four bands who were calling the shot. not like there's like "in every subgenre, four bands rise above the rest"

thanks for yr attention, as u were

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 14 April 2011 02:56 (fourteen years ago)

Where do I go to find the Big 4 of Thrash?

amphetamine fueled scholar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 14 April 2011 03:01 (fourteen years ago)

I think we're just having fun with the notion, Boston..

I actually feel responsible, I started with the next fouir of thrash question and me AG sort of went bat shit with the subgenres.

the big four of thrash...

Metallica
Megadeth
Slayer
Anthrax

SeanWayne, Thursday, 14 April 2011 03:07 (fourteen years ago)

Okay yeah I can seeit

amphetamine fueled scholar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 14 April 2011 03:09 (fourteen years ago)

its topical, cuz they've been doing some one off shows together, and us here in the states have been wanting a tour of it..

SeanWayne, Thursday, 14 April 2011 03:11 (fourteen years ago)

I feel so stupid...I knew it was Metallica and Anthrax, but didn't think Megadeth made the cut...totally spaced on Slayer. And I'm part of a Slayer group on Facebook

amphetamine fueled scholar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 14 April 2011 03:36 (fourteen years ago)

lol

i thought everyone knew who the big four of thrash was. i assumed you were just joking when you asked.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 14 April 2011 15:16 (fourteen years ago)
