Define big. Important, well known, successful or good?

StanM, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

Oh man now I feel too bad to even post my Living Colour joke post.

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 20:00 (fourteen years ago)

define it how you like , that's what everyone else will do regardless!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 20:00 (fourteen years ago)

jon the anal cunt songtitles thread is over there ---->

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 20:01 (fourteen years ago)

I didn't claim it was to be a funny joke! I was actually going to go with Black Death first.

I'll have to stay out of this one, due to my ignorence on the subgenre.. plus my corpes paint isn't dry yet.

Immortal
Mayhem
Darkthrone
Burzum

...for second wave. Emperor not in this league cuz a) they came late and b) only one classic record

Siegbran, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 20:44 (fourteen years ago)

Siegbran how did i do with the first wave list?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 20:45 (fourteen years ago)

I'd pick Emperor ahead of Immortal (Nightside is classic-er and more influential than any Immortal records) but otherwise that's pretty close. Dissection maybe the only non-Norwegian act that you could make a case for.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 20:58 (fourteen years ago)

I don't see how that 1st wave list is in any way controversial.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 21:18 (fourteen years ago)

it wasn't meant to be

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 21:20 (fourteen years ago)

You could combine Celtic Frost/Hellhammer and fit Mercyful Fate in there.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 21:22 (fourteen years ago)

fair enough. I did think about including them, but went for the 4 bands I liked best hehe

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 21:37 (fourteen years ago)

its funny how everyone can agree on the big thrash four but not other subgenres, and the big 4 was set in stone fairly early on wasn't it?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 21:38 (fourteen years ago)

Immortal
Mayhem
Darkthrone
Burzum

what about 3rd wave? (if we can even agree on who is 2rd wave)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 22:25 (fourteen years ago)

3rd wave obv

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 22:28 (fourteen years ago)

3rd wave possibly...

Agalloch
Drudkh
Weakling
Nachtmystium

I'm having a hard time thinking of bands kicking ass today that weren't part of the second wave.

I love my puppy -- and she loves me! (Viceroy), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 22:42 (fourteen years ago)

are we still on 3rd wave? Cuz 4th could be
Wolves In The Throne Room
Krallice
Liturgy
Xasthur?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 22:52 (fourteen years ago)

I assumed we were still in the third wave right now, as the second wave bands/ethos kind of dominated throughout the 90s and into the middle '00s...

I love my puppy -- and she loves me! (Viceroy), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 22:56 (fourteen years ago)

"waves" get a bit blurred when its a constant flood

☠ (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 23:02 (fourteen years ago)

true enough roxy

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 23:03 (fourteen years ago)

there is no 3rd wave, there's 1st and 2nd and then a general glut & cross-pollination sets in, for better or worse depending on your views. the first two waves are part of distinct movement with actual aesthetics; what ensues gives us a lot of great music, but can't be said to be coming from a place of generally applicable aesthetic values outside of a few very loose & flexible parameters.

shouldnt this be on the i \m/ metal board

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Thursday, 14 April 2011 04:03 (fourteen years ago)

I'd agree in placing Immortal instead of Emperor in the second wave big four. Great band, unrelenting energy, terrific riffs.

Also agree there is no third wave as such, but there might be some mileage in looking at local scenes in different countries where BM has evolved in different ways since the early ninties: US, France, Germany . .

Soukesian, Thursday, 14 April 2011 07:59 (fourteen years ago)

Ukraine too

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 14 April 2011 15:13 (fourteen years ago)

BLACK METAL IS EVERYWHERE!

. . but I'd like to see some regional big fours, the more obscure the better.
