who are the BIG FOUR of some NON-METAL GENRES?

Message Bookmarked

this is kind of a hypothetical question because i feel like most genres don't have as clear a pecking order as metal tends to, so i don't know if you even could have a definitive big four or jazz or rap or indie rock or whatever -- but have at it i guess

Metal is also tends to have very clear sub-genre dividing lines which makes it easier to ID the most innovative/important acts for those sub-genres.

I'm mean you can probably do this pretty easily with electronic/dance music too. Like Detroit Techno: Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Carl Craig. Or Chicago House: Marshall Jefferson, Larry Heard, Adonis, and uh Virgo Four or someone.

is the lesson here that no music fans are less imaginative and more prone to consensus than metalheads? because I don't know if I agree with that.

I was wondering who the big four of turn-of-the-70s production might be just this morning. I'm thinking alon the lines of:
King Tubby
Arthur Russell
Grandmaster Flash

Is there a punk equivalent?

Anagram, wouldn't the incredible string band feature in your folk list?

Evil Eau (dog latin), Thursday, 14 April 2011 08:03 (fourteen years ago)

There was one night last year when Pavement was on Jimmy Fallon and Superchunk was on another show (Kimmel maybe?), and Guided by Voices had just played announced they were touring the "classic" lineup that I tweeted the only thing missing was Archers of Loaf if they wanted to form the 90s indie Voltron. Well, now Archers are playing shows too. Anyway...

well I've never thought of ISB as being folk rock especially, they're more like psych folk. folk rock has to have electric guitars and drums.

They're in the big four of bands who were shit after three singles.

12" version of "I'm Free" w/ full Junior Reid cameo will ALWAYS be the only Soup Dragons song.

(& yes, I have heard their C86 albums - BMX bandits are better)

On second thought, Hotwired-era singles were not so bad, either.

Real synths are either analogue or sound like analogue. Nobody, except for a handful in the Chicago dance scene, used those in 1987-88.

I can agree with that, I believe. Although none of his albums were strictly synth based (He used a lot of acoustic instruments from "Dance" onwards, and mostly real bass and drums before that.
