think i'm gonna vote for "Emotions," which uses Mariah's range to a euphoric effect she's never really quite touched since then. "I'm Too Sexy" and "Good Vibrations" also a lot of fun.

Too easy now: "Jump." I loved a couple of Karyn White songs, but not "Romantic." Excellent: the part on "I'm Too Sexy" where George Michael announces, "Ladies and Gentleman, Mr. Bald-Headed Right Said Fred Guy."

I think this just misses the brief blossoming of C & C Music Factory. Too bad.

I gotta fess up and admit I don't remember the Karyn White song at all, or even Karyn White for that matter. I think it was only #1 for one week, so I guess it was easy to miss, but other people at least remember who she was. :/

Had a lot to do with why grunge took off like it did, probably. "Madchester" hit slightly before this, but it was still rolling along at the time.

Every once in a while in Idaho we would get a June snowfall & I'd have that Vanessa Williams song in my head all day. Surely it would also become an earworm in the event of a suddenly lunarcentric galazy.

xp OH GOD, "Sadeness, Pt. 1"! I had two friends who would torment me with the damn Enigma album until I would flip out and leave (or at least go to another room).

I don't see this list as any more or less dire than usual! And grunge kept a lot of weird, interesting hits off the charts -- the college charts too.

I <3 almost all of this stuff.

I just don't accept the narrative that grunge "saved" us from future "The Promise of a New Day"s.

This was my freshman year in HS btw and God I remember Everything I Do being on ALL THE TIME and hating it even then.

I don't either. Grunge turned out to be awful for rock music. I was just offering a rationale for it filling a void. xps

"Bliss it was to be alive" if you were Johnny or me in 1991 and 1992: a senior in high school, ready for the temptations of college. Because Nirvana happened to coincide with a presidential election year, it seemed as if the whole world was changing, but, really, most anything would have sounded awesome if I'd come of age in 1990, 1985, or 2001.

I love Vanessa Williams' way with a ballad -- such a light touch.

"Save the Best for Last" would've been an o-kay song performed by anyone else, I'm sure of it. But she launches it into the stratosphere.

I was four years out of high school in 1991 and got married that summer. If I had to pick one of these it'd be either the Mariah Carey or the Paula Abdul, probably, although that Abdul is one of my least favorite songs by her.

1995: I was playing bass in my first band, working at a record store, obsessed with The Bends, drinking a lot, taking an extended break from a long-term girlfriend and going out with disreputable women, and living in a house that was party central. So yeah, "Colors of the Wind" somehow slipped past me.

This is my senior year too. For me, PM Dawn by a long way, which is pretty much what I thought then too.
