What artist/band are you glad existed because of their influence?

I think it's pretty self-explanatory. A lot of times bands are criticized for their horrible influence over music (Pearl Jam yield thousands of shitty bands), but what bands/artists had a positive impact upon music in their influence?

James Morris, Friday, 30 August 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Predictable, maybe, but the Velvet Underground, the Stooges and the Ramones.

Felt and the Go Betweens

Influence doesn't exist!
In another universe where it does exist, I'll nominate the Beach Boys. For: harmonies, beautiful songs, pop experimentalism done well.

Custos do you have a big team helping you not get it?

mark s (mark s), Friday, 30 August 2002 11:24 (twenty-three years ago)

don't think Forbert influenced anyone, he just analogizes along w/folks pretty well.

Curtis Mayfield, for whom we have to thank not just some of hip-hop's finest beats (and in some cases, thinkers, i.e. those who took his sardonic stance toward everything except love), but Jamaican harmony groups galore (who took his awestruck stance toward love to the motherfuckin' BANK). Pete Scholtes, holler on me!

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 30 August 2002 11:26 (twenty-three years ago)

mark: that's a tough one to get.

Is it because influence flows backwards and he ripped everyone off?

I thought the joke was that influence in the way it is used is just a magic wand which means whatever vague notion the user wishes it to mean therefore make up any old notion and pat boone, yes, could be the most 'influential' artist ever? Am I lost?

mark e (mark e), Friday, 30 May 2003 07:15 (twenty-three years ago)

me list -- if they made this list, it's because i like most of what they inspired (even if they also inspired some shit):

bowie -- kraftwerk -- the velvets -- cybotron -- gary numan -- brian eno -- black sabbath -- the sex pistols -- the jesus and mary chain -- biggie smalls -- sonic youth -- the pixies -- the cocteau twins

on the fence (cause the great-to-crap ratio is closer to 1:1 than the above-mentioned):

the kinks -- the rolling stones -- frank zappa -- neil young
