Need to listen to this again but first impulse is to say "New Partner."

Also I've always wanted Dolly Parton to cover "Work Hard/Play Hard."

more brother rides

nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 15:53 (fourteen years ago)

This is tough - I opted for "More Brother Rides" for the wonderfully bleak noir feel, but there were about five other serious contenders.

Ramen Noodles & Ketchup (R Baez), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 15:56 (fourteen years ago)

"New Partner" is going to win, and rightfully so, but love "We All, Us Three, Will Ride."

slagterm, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 16:07 (fourteen years ago)

My list:

1. More Brother Rides
2. New Partner
3. We All, Us Three, Will Ride
4. Viva Ultra
5. Cat's Blues
6. The Brute Choir
7. Work Hard/Play Hard
8. The Mountain Low
9. Old Jerusalem
10. Tonight's Decision (And Hereafter)

Not a bad one in the bunch.

Hard to imagine buying Viva Last Blues WHEN IT CAME OUT. How was it received in its time?

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:07 (fourteen years ago)

where I worked we considered it the best shit he'd done except for "For the Mekons Et Al" from the Hey Drag City comp

^ you can just set a keystroke for that post whenever you wanna invoke "long-in-the-tooth indie geek"

How was it received in its time?

I worked at a college radio station with a buncha people who already loved Palace Bros and they all thought it was great, it got a ton of airplay. The Hope EP I remember people had mixed feelings about but this one was pretty unanimous luv.

for me at the time it didn't top the Horses 7". oh snap, indie geek-off ignited.

dmr, Thursday, 28 April 2011 01:37 (fourteen years ago)

yes well of course any indie geek worth his salt knew that the best Palace Bros release in '95 was the Let the Wires Ring 7" on Hausmusik

THIS. THIS IS WHAT I HAVE CHOSEN TO DO WITH THE PRECIOUS CIRCUITRY PLACED INSIDE MY BRAIN PAN BY MY CREATOR.

I remember most people thinking he had really come into his own with this albu
(though personally liked the self-titled and Hope more).

I will gladly get in on the geek-off - I used to cover Let the Wires Ring all the time when I played shows back then.

scott pgwp (pgwp), Thursday, 28 April 2011 02:20 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks for your reminiscences. I consider this album as always in contention for my #1 album of all time. I have toyed with the idea of getting the cover image as a tattoo on and off for years now. Don't think I'll ever commit, but I like to think about it. This would be a fantastic 33 1/3, just as an oral history and to debunk some of the myths around. I have heard repeated that the band never rehearsed any of the songs?

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Thursday, 28 April 2011 04:47 (fourteen years ago)

I was a fanboy and tbqh I think it was kinda a letdown. Today I think the LP is half great still today. I think that by Joya I was officially offboard, but this coupled with the majority of Arise, Therefore set my tender devotion astray. Still will rep for all the early stuff though, it was an intense run, apotheosis maybe THE MOUNTAIN (LOW) EP

it's time for the fish in the perculator (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 28 April 2011 04:51 (fourteen years ago)

When I interviewed David Pajo for my Spiderland book he said that when he played with Will that not only did they not rehearse, but that sometimes the first time he'd hear a song would be the moment they were recording it. He wasn't specifically talking about this record (did he play on this record at all?) but it definitely sounds like Oldham's MO at this point in his career.

scott pgwp (pgwp), Thursday, 28 April 2011 04:57 (fourteen years ago)

Pretty sure that Pajo was the only Slint member NOT to play on There Is No-One..., but maybe he did some of the singles/EPs?

it's time for the fish in the perculator (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 28 April 2011 05:02 (fourteen years ago)

Arise, Therefore definitely put me off. it had drum machine on it ffs. I like it a little better now.
