Good artists that have horrible taste in music

I'm not too familiar with my favorite artist's taste in music, but I'm sure some of you know some examples.

Never really understood what Bono saw in Patti Smith and Springsteen, but I'm starting to question what I saw in U2, so it's a moot point, I guess.

Elvis Costello likes Sinatra and Destiny's Child.

Who wouldn't? His covers album is k-awful though.

Although Sonic Youth tend to have good taste in music, I can't get over the fact that Ranaldo listens to the Grateful Dead.

The inverse of this qn:

Dreadful artists with good taste in music = David Holmes

Greg Ginn was into the Dead as well... go figure.

I can't get into the doo-wap like Zappa could...

And Todd Rundgren often diverges into lite-soul.

Van Morrison seems, to this day, overly impressed with the "radio" he's always blathering on about. Maybe he gets stations we're not privy to. Radio sucks.

Maybe he likes WFMU.

David Holmes = dreadful artist? How on Earth do you figure?

Bjork with Boney M (but that's an old joke by now).
Brian Eno has to be one of the best & worst if you know what I mean (work out which...)

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 30 August 2002 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, Eno produced hits for James for fucks sake!

The Neptunes own this thread (or at least Pharell does). Also, I think the only time Madonna has actually shocked me was when she said "Music" was inspired by a Sting concert.

As a Cure-obsessed 13 years old, I could not understand why Robert Smith's new idol was Cathy Dennis. This was an incomprehensible mystery to me.

Just a minute!!! There is nothing wrong with James and Springsteen!

Panagiotis Pileidis, Sunday, 1 September 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Are the Neptunes massive Skynyrd fans?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 1 September 2002 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Massive America (the band, not the country/continents) fans.

I never understood how Sonic Youth could fall for Madonna. Though I think their version of Into the Groove is brilliant.

Dreadful artists with good taste in music

most of them!

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 1 September 2002 21:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Elvis Presley always seemed a lot more interested in singing "Bridge Over Troubled Water" than "Don't Be Cruel."

most of them!

must be repeated

Joe Carducci has some pretty funny quips along the lines of "record collectors should stick to record collecting, not form bands," in re: stuff like Therapy? (Not that I've heard enough Therapy? to know whether they deserve the abuse.)

Elvis Presley had fuckin' SUPERB taste in music: Arthur Crudup, B.B. King, The Blackwood Brothers, Hank Snow. Great stuff.

Springsteen has joined Elvis Costello in the realm of ABBA lovers, but then so has everyone on ILM 'cept me. And heck, even I cannot deny the genius of "Dancing Queen", "The Winner Takes It All" and- yes, yes, y'all- "The King Kong Song", tho I am less impressed by "I Do, I Do, I Do" and "Thank You For The Music". Must be that lyrics thing.

And this is slightly off topic, but Mumia Abu Jamal is really big on Whitney Houston. If only all those college kids rolling spliffs in his honour knew...

There's no bigger Elvis fan than me. (And I don't doubt he had an impressive record collection.) But in the Vegas years, he consistently treated songs like "Hound Dog" and "All Shook Up" as novelty material, reserving his more ambitious vocalizing for crap like "My Way" and "This Time You Gave Me a Mountain."
