So, what'd ya think? I thought it was a bit flaccid, but hey....that's only my perspective. The cornrows have to go, too.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 30 August 2002 01:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree. About the cornrows. And his voice sounded really bad during "Welcome To The Jungle". Like he was winded right after they started playing. I think he got it together for the rest of it though. I haven't heard high notes like that on t.v. since his first MTV heyday. Or, actually, since Justin Timberlakes's historic solo performance earlier. And why did Brandy seem so excited to introduce a bandless Justin to the world? HMMM.Does she have money in it. Buckethead looked lovely.

Scott Seward, Friday, 30 August 2002 01:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought it was horrible, and it further proves my theory that Slash was the real brains behind Guns N' Roses. I mean, did you actually hear that new song they threw in the middle of the medley?

The best part of the performance was Jimmy Fallon's genuine excitement about it before it actually happened.

paul cox, Friday, 30 August 2002 01:47 (twenty-three years ago)

In all fairness, Axl's return was certainly the highlight of the show. Actually, that's not entirely true -- I'd say the highlight was the Hives. The Vines just don't really excite me....just a hipper Silverchair at the end of the day.

Justin Timberlake's "historic solo performance"?!?!? I do hope that was a sarcastic remark.

Points to Fallon for his potshot at Jacko!

Alex in NYC, Friday, 30 August 2002 02:16 (twenty-three years ago)

G & R fucking ruled until the moment Axl opened his mouth. NIN guitar freakshow Robin Finck played Slash.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 30 August 2002 02:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i was very disappointed when that celestial synth sweep after the first song didn't turn into "November Rain". that new tune was pretty bad...you'd think after 10 years he'd have something to get people a little excited about besides the oldies. but eh, it was still a huge thrill, just the surprise and all, i really didn't see it coming. by that point, i was in the other room on the computer when i heard the announcement from my roommate's TV and ran in screaming "what!?".

Al (sitcom), Friday, 30 August 2002 03:03 (twenty-three years ago)

DID YOU GUYS SEE THE P.DIDDY HAMMER TRIBUTE?!!! TOP SHELF!

boxcubed (boxcubed), Friday, 30 August 2002 03:09 (twenty-three years ago)

The Timberlake track was the best thing on the show (Neptunes production I'm assuming? - and it would mix great with "Slave 4 U"), except yeah, the P Diddy knee slide thing was 2 Legit 2 Quit.

and why oh why did the Hives not just play "Hate to Say..." it's not like they're Pink or Alannis and have to prove that they have other singles on the album. "Main Offender" is good, just not grate...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 August 2002 04:05 (twenty-three years ago)

And I just saw the Axl & Co. performance which I at first thought was a Horatio Sanz comedy sketch. Actually, I do hope he had a cold, otherwise...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 August 2002 04:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I turned in right at the end and I thought Axl was Jimmy Fallon in a wig. The band sounded good. Axl's voice was a little off.

Andy, Friday, 30 August 2002 04:53 (twenty-three years ago)

FAKE HAIR. terrible voX0r. and that "new song" - guh when the camera spends that much time on the keyboards you know something's wrong

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 30 August 2002 05:21 (twenty-three years ago)

axl = tame as a kitty now! after the show he sincerely thanked kurt loder for a positive concert review! kurt was embarassed for him!

boxcubed (boxcubed), Friday, 30 August 2002 05:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Poor Kurt's in no position to be embarassed for anyone other than himself. I mean, how does he face himself in the mirror in the morning after having to act 'down' with the likes of MTV Nation 2002???? He and John Norris should do each other a favor and kill each other.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 30 August 2002 05:55 (twenty-three years ago)

i think that might have already been rendered in claymation

boxcubed (boxcubed), Friday, 30 August 2002 05:58 (twenty-three years ago)

god the band was amazing but poor axl lost his voice!!!!

chaki (chaki), Friday, 30 August 2002 07:42 (twenty-three years ago)

it was REALLY sad

chaki (chaki), Friday, 30 August 2002 07:42 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh but buckethead's solo on paradice city is awesome!

chaki (chaki), Friday, 30 August 2002 07:44 (twenty-three years ago)

oh dude buckethead is playing a sunburst les paul like slash! haha!

chaki (chaki), Friday, 30 August 2002 07:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Buckethead's solo sounded just like Slash's solo! And therein lies the problem w/ this enterprise - Axl & Co. trying to keep up with the legacy of G&R, and literally running out of breath and falling flat. Sticking that new song smackdab in the middle of the classics (as if they can sneak another wussy ballad past the fannies) was lame. And THREE GUITARISTS? (There were 3, right?) This ain't no fuckin' G&R - this is fucking King Crimson Lite, doood! And while there's nothing wrong w/ that, I'm just wondering why Axl doesn't just, um, start over and do something else instead of dry-humping this cadaver that will only acknowledge such affection if brought back to life the right way (cf. what Buddyhead.com has been saying for the past, oh, 15 years).

Blaaaah. The MTV VMAs always make me feel like I'm drinking a castor oil / OJ / toothpaste cocktail. Blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 August 2002 10:57 (twenty-three years ago)

cornrows? on axl? somehow i saw them as 13-year-old-white-girl-vacationing-in-barbados braids. as for his voice, it made me wonder very honestly as to how people like dickinson are still pretty incredible vocally, any ideas at all?

marek, Friday, 30 August 2002 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

this is pretty unbelieveable...worth noting the chaos of the evening

XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX FRIDAY AUGUST 30, 2002 10:52:28 ET XXXXX

MICHAEL JACKSON BLOWUP: MTV TAKES AWAY AWARD IT NEVER GAVE

MTV announced late Thursday it had not presented Michael Jackson with "artist of the millennium" honors at the 2002 Video Music Awards -- even though the pop star believed he had accepted such an award on live TV!

"When I was a little boy in Indiana, if someone had told me that one day I'd be getting the Artist of the Millennium award, I wouldn't have believed it, " Jackson told the audience after receiving a standing ovation. "I can't believe it."

Don't believe it.

MORE

"There is no such honor," MTV quickly announced. "It was an unfortunate misunderstanding."

On the morning after the night before a Jackson source fumed to DRUDGE: "Britney handed him the award! It was silver with a red bow...

"What do they mean, there is 'no such award'... What was the award then? This is no way to treat the artist which put MTV on the map!"

RED-FACED AT RADIO CITY

MTV explained the confusion in a report on MTV.COM, placing blame for the cross-communication on the stars.

"Britney Spears introduced birthday boy Michael Jackson and presented him with a tiered cake. She referred to Jackson as 'the artist of the millennium,' and Jackson thought he actually won an award by that name, though no such award exists."

Developing...

steve k, Friday, 30 August 2002 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Most of Usher's songs suck shit but he is a ridiculous dancer! That's about all of the show I saw. Jack White was wearing a nice suit.

Kris (aqueduct), Friday, 30 August 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Axl's extensions and Pieere Deux-style bandana are explained by the fact that he is almost completely bad (not that there's anything wrong with that). I thought he looked pretty good, actually, especially considering the life he's led.

Axl's Tommy Stinson/Josh Freise/Buckethead/Robin Finck G n'R lineup was like a weird Village People or Spice girls type exquisite corpse of a backup band. The Replacements and Cirque du Soleil do not match! I liked the new songlet, though.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 30 August 2002 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Axl looks like Archie from the comic books circa 1949.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 30 August 2002 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, he is from Indiana.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 30 August 2002 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm from Minnesota and I don't fucking look like that.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 30 August 2002 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Guns'n'Roses current line up looks like something that would come out of a rock and roll rotisserie league draft.

earlnash, Friday, 30 August 2002 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought it was lousy. It was like Axl fronting a freakshow tribute band. Gimmicks galore. The lead guitarist is exactly half as good as Slash. He may have been playing the same notes (maybe) but he certainly lacked the bluesy finesse during the solo. And his guitar tone sucked too.

Mark M, Friday, 30 August 2002 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Axl's extensions and Pieere Deux-style bandana are explained by the fact that he is almost completely bad

bad = bald?

bnw (bnw), Friday, 30 August 2002 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

haha yes, thank you, I owe you a bloody mary.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 30 August 2002 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

and Pieere Deux = Pierre Deux. I think I'll go get some fresh air now.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 30 August 2002 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm from Minnesota and I don't look like that either. Nor does Tommy Stinson (ex-Replacements playing goon bass for W. Axl Rose). I don't think I look like Matos, either...

Don Weiner, Friday, 30 August 2002 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

b-but surely he is completely bad also!! he's AXL ROSE people!!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 30 August 2002 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

oh haven't you heard mark? he's gotten critical rehab in the past couple years in the states. Big Time.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 30 August 2002 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I am from Illinois and I look exactly like that.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 30 August 2002 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

haha earlnash, is it a keeper league do you suppose?

felicity (felicity), Friday, 30 August 2002 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Felicity you stole my joke by exactly one state east

J0hn Darn1elle, Friday, 30 August 2002 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

G'n'F'n'R 2.0 are like Jordan with the Wizards: I just don't want to know.

James Blount, Saturday, 31 August 2002 00:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Was that Brain playing drums, or Josh Freese?

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 31 August 2002 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

b-but surely he is completely bad also!! he's AXL ROSE people!!
Exactly -- that's why the suggestion that he's "almost completely bad" was an obvious typo.

OleM (OleM), Saturday, 31 August 2002 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

its brain on drums.

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 1 September 2002 23:40 (twenty-three years ago)

ba(l)d brains?

bnw (bnw), Monday, 2 September 2002 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

eleven months pass...
Has it already been a year since this happened?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess so.

And yet, there's still no set release date for Chinese Democracy? Not that it's at all surprising...

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
It's called Chinese Democracy because it isn't going to happen in our lifetime. Duh.

Michael G, Friday, 17 October 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Then they should've called it American Democracy (said the nurse to the vicar)

mentalist (mentalist), Sunday, 19 October 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The title and the afore-mentioned joke (it's called Chinese Democracy because it doesn't exist) makes me wonder if it isn't all an elaborate ruse on the public....but I don't think Axl is quite that whipsmart.
