well I nominated Murray Head so I should probably abstain here

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 17:42 (fourteen years ago)

nah "No Diggity" is R'n'B and Saint Etienne are like ethnically cleansed pop or something

A Zed and Two Nults (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 17:42 (fourteen years ago)

but fwiw Blackstreet no, St Et hell no, Gil Scott Heron yes

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 17:43 (fourteen years ago)

Gil is maybe proto-Hip Hop i guess

A Zed and Two Nults (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 17:44 (fourteen years ago)

we should call the music 'rap'

not as cool sounding as 'hip-hop,' but less confusing?

maybe not. allmusic has the primary genre for the Last Poets as "Comedy/Spoken" hahaha.

thanks to this poll, I've learned not to care about the labels so much.

popular gay automobile (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 17:55 (fourteen years ago)

not really taking genre-naming instructions of some guy called lo-fi

A Zed and Two Nults (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 17:57 (fourteen years ago)

sorry if you thought I was offering instructions.

and rap/hip-hop was lo-fi for its' first glorious ten years or so.

nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

"No Diggity" is hip-hop (two verses by two rappers plus a hip hoppish beat is enough for me), 1970s Gil-Scott Heron isn't (just because you influence a genre doesn't mean you belong to that genre, otherwise Muddy Waters was doing hard rock back in the 1950s). I have no idea what this "Saint Etienne" thing is.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 20 April 2011 07:34 (fourteen years ago)

All of these were my nominations... I guess a hoy is baiting me.

This is the St. Etienne track in question, which I actually removed from my noms after a second thought:

Not supposed to be baiting, just... ok yeah accidental baiting.

popular gay automobile (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 20 April 2011 10:56 (fourteen years ago)

I nominated Hustler's Convention and I won't be voting for it even if it doesn't get bumped now.

PG Harpy (Doran), Wednesday, 20 April 2011 12:08 (fourteen years ago)

Fwiw, I first heard Saint Etienne's "Filthy" on this album:
