Bat Out of Hell Trilogy Poll

Obv the third one will likely only get comedy votes, but I'm mostly doing this cuz I'm curious how many people (if any) prefer the second Bat to the first. and if there are any loonies who think the third one is the bee's knees.

Poll Results

OptionVotes
Bat Out of Hell 18
I don't like any of them 18
Bat Out of Hell 2 3
Bat Out of Hell 3 3

I predict a landslide for the 4th option.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 21 April 2011 21:57 (fourteen years ago)

Should've been a vote on the album covers.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 April 2011 21:57 (fourteen years ago)

I'd vote positively on covers, but I'm 100% sure the world would be a better place if this music never existed.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 21 April 2011 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

:(. I mean I'm a sucker for extremely over the top rock and always has been, no matter how hard it is to digest.

I go more with BOOH1 because it's more of a rock 'n roll album that does a better job of trimming the fat. but BOOH2 has some great ridiculo-ballads on it

Neanderthal, Thursday, 21 April 2011 22:36 (fourteen years ago)

i do love the phrase 'Objects in the rearview mirror may appear closer than they are' being sung overdramatically about 52 times as the centerpiece of a 10 minute song

Neanderthal, Thursday, 21 April 2011 22:39 (fourteen years ago)

i'm pretty glad meatloaf exists

O da Huge Manatee (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 21 April 2011 22:52 (fourteen years ago)

I've long wondered if non-Americans "get" the title of "Objects in the Rearview Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are".

That's a legally-required imprint on the on convex rear-view mirrors on the passenger side of any car sold in the US, familiar to any American. Only flat mirrors are allowed on the driver side here, which I consider rather unsafe since there is no way I can adjust it so there won't be a blind spot. Grey-market driver-side convex or aspherical mirrors intended for foreign-market cars are a popular item; I have one on my VW. Curiously, it's perfectly legal for third-party companies to sell them and for owners to install & use them; manufacturers just aren't allowed to sell new cars so equipped. That wasn't much of an issue when the law was made decades ago, long before the interwebs made buying imported auto parts easy.

(/thread drift)

The original Bat rules for me, although Bat II was reasonably good as sequels go. Never heard Bat III.

Lee626, Thursday, 21 April 2011 22:57 (fourteen years ago)

fuck haters Bat I is a fantastic record and i love every track on it

never heard II

imo this poll is kind of pointless, Bat 2 is nice but Bat 1 is the only really sane option. when Bat 3 was released and they sent the song with Nikki Sixx to hard rock radio, the local station only played it for laughs.

tbh i'd be more interested in a poll of his non-Bat albums, just to see if anyone can tell me about the relative merits of Blind Before I Stop or Hang Cool Teddy Bear or whatever.

I fucking love BOoH. Forget about the rest but the first is stone cold classic.

I like OTT rock as well, but for some reason I've always found Bat out of Hell to be, I don't know...annoying? I am also glad that Meat Loaf exists though. I kind of feel that Jim Steinman's truly terrible & baffling "Bad for Good" needs to be in the poll somehow.

Man I remember in sixth grade there was some like live performance & dance/video media presentation at our school about not doing drugs. My parents p much only listened to lite hits so when it opened with a smoke machine + "Life is a Lemon (And I Want My Money Back)" my mind was blown. It sounded like the evil music in Christian cartoons but exhilarating and entertaining. So I have a soft spot for 2. Don't do drugs!

yea I think #2 hits its stride after the pseudo-metal tracks get out of the way.

i am really curious as to whether option #4 or option #1 wins.

Surprised option #4 wasn't Born to Run.

that's not funny. (unperson), Saturday, 7 May 2011 23:15 (fourteen years ago)

#1 (unless you are a #4 fan) is the only serious option here. The sequel was obviously weaker than the original, and III version was a sick joke.

TS: Meatloaf's "Objects in the Rearview Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are" vs Monty Python's "I'm So worried about the Baggage Retrieval System they've got at Heathrow"

ha!

ledge, Monday, 9 May 2011 14:02 (fourteen years ago)

The MLoaf song always reminded me of the MPython song, and not just because of the long song title.

Similarly, The La's "There she goes" and the Pythons' "Here comes another one"

just got back from a doctor visit. took an Uber home and the driver was listening to "Bat Out of Hell" and very excitedly telling me about the history of Meatloaf

Bat Out of Hell II is more epic in scope, more over the top, produced within an inch of its life and while the songwriting is of the same quality as the first record, I prefer the ballads on the second one - would have been quite an easy choice, really, although it's close.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 30 March 2018 20:00 (seven years ago)

Also, given that Bat Out of Hell II is a long album, there's surprisingly little fat or padding on it. Steinman knew how to write epic songs and keep them engaging throughout.

seven years pass...

this week i found BBOH I/II in a freebie box, and then today picked up BOOH III for a coin in a local charity shop.
has to be said, there is very much a vibe across them all.
and despite myself, i am kind of really enjoying the excess.
could be cos of my love for GHOST of course i.e. the widescreen sonics vs tunes + choral extras.

mark e, Friday, 16 May 2025 20:00 (seven months ago)

i'm not huge on steinman in his natural (meat loaf/bonnie/pandora's box etc) habitat as much as i admire it but i suddenly love it when he applies his imax vision to the sisters of mercy or take that. not even sure if there's a will this/won't this work tension that draws me in with those latter projects cus i don't hear it. i just think he was great as an added voice (nay, chorus) when others, sparingly, are looking for that topup, maybe? (although not even he could find the opera in boyzone)

i love his collab with Air Supply “Making Love Outta Nothing At All”
it’s always fun to hear the changes a band/artist takes on when he’s behind the wheel, you can almost feel the wind machine whirring to life lol
