you should go undercover and join a post-rock band to see how the other half lives xp

It's ok to rely on fx pedals if you develop your own sound with it (e.g. Manuel Gottsching, um The Edge?), but I can't stand listening to guitarists who've bought all the "right" pedals and basically just turned them on.

I guess the effects overload comes into play on loud aggressive passages, some seem to use lots of reverb and distortion, others use bit-crushing, max/msp stuttering and all sorts of glitchy stuff to make their guitars sound more like keyboards or sound design, who knows if any of them are that great. I certainly dislike the half-hearted and melodically uncertain (too many open string passages) style of playing that Mono & EITS often seem to employ, it ain't really very difficult to play in that sort of style.

see i am a big fan of most of these bands, but yes have never found any of them to be particular good at playing said instruments.

Ain't enough effects pedals in the world to cover up if you can't, on some level, execute what you're trying to play. Garbage in, garbage out, and garbage coming through a chorus pedal is just watery-sounding garbage.

effects pedals are really fucking cool

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Wednesday, 27 April 2011 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

I saw The Joy Formidable last night and both guitarist and bassist had crazy-ass effects pedal layouts, but neither struck me as being unable to play. Like, at all.

it does take some skill to get those effects pedals to work properly

tylerw, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 20:43 (fourteen years ago)

Yea, the hiding behind effects theory doesn't really stand up ime

Sometimes I don't get the criticism: in the end if it sounds good, why does it matter? But then if it's a cheap trick, it lessens its impact.
But I don't know why either Mono or EiTS were mentioned since they're both very capable with their instruments imo.

I'd say there are more people playing synths making music that can't really play a lick of keyboards. In a way for alot of electronic music, the more you know the worse it is.

as in most genres, the level of musicianship varies widely!

'Level of Musicianship' is a red herring.

soul first, technique later

ogmor, Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:43 (fourteen years ago)

What the hell is 'soul'? Bent notes?

to the thread's question, I don't listen to much post-rock at all, but Gastr Del Sol consisted of two fucking amazing guitarists.
