...or you can just vote for the sleeve too!

Anyway: the only NO album whose album tracks are stronger than the single(s). I voted for "Weirdo" over "Way of Life" and "All Day Long."

Most of the live renditions of this material range from good to outstanding. There's a lovely version of "As It Is When It Was" from the '93 tour; and a lively "Paradise" from the '98 Reading show.

My mom is all about capital gains tax butthurtedness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 24 April 2011 01:33 (fourteen years ago)

Gonna have to listen to this some before I vote. My least favorite of the 80s albums by some margin.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 April 2011 01:34 (fourteen years ago)

Voted for the sleeve. This is the album where I got off the bus.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 24 April 2011 01:35 (fourteen years ago)

Hopefully you got back on for Technique, because you're missing out if you didn't.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 April 2011 01:36 (fourteen years ago)

btw I just noticed this is on ILE for some reason.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 April 2011 01:37 (fourteen years ago)

Nah, I was never much of a NO fan in the first place. I really disliked Technique at the time and haven't gone back to give it another go in nearly 20 years.

xpost

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 24 April 2011 01:42 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, mods -- please move to ILM. Thanks.

My mom is all about capital gains tax butthurtedness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 24 April 2011 01:47 (fourteen years ago)

I'm gonna need to relisten because it's been a while & I'm inclined to vote "Every Second Counts" which can't be right, can it?

Euler, Sunday, 24 April 2011 01:52 (fourteen years ago)

This album excels on vinyl. Really love every track. Weirdo snuck up on my over the years and I now recognize it's power and glory. Voted All Day Long. Could have voted for any other track here though.

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 24 April 2011 03:03 (fourteen years ago)

Can't remember track titles, do remember really enjoying side 1

Crazed Mister Handy (kingfish), Sunday, 24 April 2011 06:59 (fourteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Never bought this!

Voted sleeve, obv.

Mark G, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 23:16 (fourteen years ago)

"As It Is When It Was" I always liked this album even if it's not really outstanding. It reminds me of jogging through the woods behind my parents' house.

deez m'uts (La Lechera), Wednesday, 27 April 2011 23:18 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I never really got into this one or Technique - didn't hear Technique until a while after it had been around. I think I got so much New Order during the glut of PCL & Low-Life & Blue Monday I had kind of had enough for a long while.

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Wednesday, 27 April 2011 23:26 (fourteen years ago)

Echoing La Lechera's post. Except for the jogging.

righteousmaelstrom, Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:13 (fourteen years ago)

I think Brotherhood is a great album (as I said above) but I really think it rewards persistance and repeat plays more than any other New Order album.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:22 (fourteen years ago)

Way of Life has some choice lines that -- even though they're not really all that remarkable alone -- sound so la-ti-da and sing-songy in the song that they sting pretty hard:

"Who do you think you're talking to? When I look at you I know you're lying"
"You told me a pack of lies that I can't even reason with"

I guess for me this record totally has "angry/burned teenage girl" written all over it, but I'm clearly projecting.

deez m'uts (La Lechera), Thursday, 28 April 2011 01:21 (fourteen years ago)

"Way of Life" has that beyond-awesome acoustic guitar/bass break in the middle.

My mom is all about capital gains tax butthurtedness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 April 2011 02:02 (fourteen years ago)

"All Day Long" has some of the same majesty as the best stuff on Power, Corruption and Lies

Dan S, Thursday, 28 April 2011 03:08 (fourteen years ago)

I actually like the post-reunion albums better than this. Voted for the cover.

Doctor Madame Frances Experimento LLC (SNM), Thursday, 28 April 2011 07:11 (fourteen years ago)

this album is fucking awesome fuiud

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 28 April 2011 07:24 (fourteen years ago)

Very fond of side one, especially "Weirdo" -- I always liked when New Order would do rock songs. The production on this album is a little too dense, though. It feels a little fatiguing after a few songs - similar to listening to brickwalled CDs.

"Angel Dust" is an underrated dance track.

Kent Burt, Thursday, 28 April 2011 14:31 (fourteen years ago)

"All Day Long" is hands down my favorite NO tune; even played it at my wedding, it's so dense and emotional

Really wish they had more stuff like that

frogbs, Thursday, 28 April 2011 14:36 (fourteen years ago)

new order are the best at melancholic yet uptempo rock songs

br8080 (dayo), Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:34 (fourteen years ago)

I had this album on cassette and listened to it once before it was stolen from me. I never bothered to repurchase it.

Voted cover art.

Dreaded Burrito Gang (DJP), Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

curious as to how many NO fans rate republic & other 90s & 00s stuff over this

br8080 (dayo), Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:47 (fourteen years ago)

I rate it above all of those, but least of the original 80s albums.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:49 (fourteen years ago)

I'll take Republic over Movement.

There. I said it.

My mom is all about capital gains tax butthurtedness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:50 (fourteen years ago)

DJP is already firing up the guided missiles.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:53 (fourteen years ago)

To my ears "If we could buy it now/How long will it last?" sung by Barney at his most winsome and the Sumnerettes, contains all of the pain and confusion that Movement attempted.

My mom is all about capital gains tax butthurtedness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:54 (fourteen years ago)

DJP is already firing up the guided missiles.

got that straight, and I'm one of the biggest boosters of shiny studio-polished New Order on ILM

The biggest failure of the 80s albums for me is that none of them aside from Low-Life capture the raging, furious pathos that rampages throughout Movement, and Low-Life itself is indelibly marred by the horrible, horrible versions of the singles. I don't find a groove that clicks with me in anywhere near the same manner until Technique, and then they dip back out into inconsistency until Get Ready.

I will not deny that they've released fantastic songs all throughout their career but I don't think they were always successful in putting them together into a coherent album; Movement fits that bill for me, as does Technique, Get Ready and Waiting For The Sirens' Call. With the others, there's a speed bump somewhere that kills the whole thing for me (or, in the case of Brotherhood I have literally zero recollection of it beyond thinking I would be perfectly fine never hearing it again).

Dreaded Burrito Gang (DJP), Thursday, 28 April 2011 16:01 (fourteen years ago)

if you like GR and WFTSC, you and Brotherhood should get on fine. Try it again!

My mom is all about capital gains tax butthurtedness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 April 2011 16:03 (fourteen years ago)

Hmm, maybe I will!

If you took the versions of the singles off of it (or made Barney rerecord his vocals so it didn't sound like he was singing with a cold while passing a gallstone) Low-Life would be my favorite New Order album. "Sunrise", "Elegia" and "This Time of Night" in particular are just majestic songs, easily among the best in their career.

Although wait, Face-Up is on that too, right? Ugh that fucking piece of shit, nuke it forever.

Dreaded Burrito Gang (DJP), Thursday, 28 April 2011 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

oh how I cannot bear the posts by you

"All Day Long"

I don't know why, but I can't get into Technique

Difficult to get beyond "Bizarre Love Triangle", but I'm going to do so because the extended mix is better than the album version. Voting "Weirdo".

Neil S, Thursday, 28 April 2011 16:28 (fourteen years ago)

Oh and of the 80s records Technique > PCL > Low Life > Brotherhood > Movement

Neil S, Thursday, 28 April 2011 16:29 (fourteen years ago)

And all 5 of those records are better than anything they released subsequently, with the possible exception of the first 3 tracks from Republic.

Neil S, Thursday, 28 April 2011 16:30 (fourteen years ago)

Movement = Technique > Sirens' > Get Ready > Republic > LL = PCL ? Brotherhood

Dreaded Burrito Gang (DJP), Thursday, 28 April 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

Technique
Low Life/PC&L
WFTSC/Republic
Brotherhood/Get Ready/Movement

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 28 April 2011 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

Movement > PCL > Low Life >>> Technique > WFTSC > Get Ready >>> Brotherhood > Republic

Doctor Madame Frances Experimento LLC (SNM), Thursday, 28 April 2011 17:16 (fourteen years ago)

I didn't know people actually liked Movement
I'm not really crazy about JD outside of "Disorder" and "Isolation" so a watered-down version of that sound is not appealing at all to me

Technique is the best one, PCL second, other ones phwwwaaaa

frogbs, Thursday, 28 April 2011 17:24 (fourteen years ago)

I've always been a huge fan of Movement and have never understood why it is so despised despite reading many explanations. Even the band hated it. It's easily my favourite New Order LP. They really peaked between 1981-1982 for me - just about the best band ever during that period.

Movement >> PC&L >>> Low-life > Brotherhood > WFTSC > Technique > Get Ready >>>> Republic

I bought the 1981-1982 CD back in 1989 and that would be slotted right after Movement above cos it's fucking awesome.

Kent Burt, Thursday, 28 April 2011 22:27 (fourteen years ago)

that 81-82 EP is the single best disc they've ever released.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 28 April 2011 22:38 (fourteen years ago)

I can buy that, except that they released three other albums as good.

My mom is all about capital gains tax butthurtedness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 April 2011 22:39 (fourteen years ago)

Went for "Broken Promise" but could have been "Paradise" too!

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 28 April 2011 22:49 (fourteen years ago)

I'm struggling to be honest. Just listened to the whole thing through for the first time for I don't know how long. It was a bit of a drag. I guess I'll have to go BLT.

I was gonna do a ranking poll of the 5 80s New Order albums, but maths tells me there are 120 different ways to rank 5 things ;_;

br8080 (dayo), Thursday, 28 April 2011 23:28 (fourteen years ago)

It's fucked up that Paradise didn't get a single vote.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 29 April 2011 00:01 (fourteen years ago)

It is awesome that "Weirdo" got third place after the cover won in a landslide.

My mom is all about capital gains tax butthurtedness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 29 April 2011 02:02 (fourteen years ago)

how did i miss this? sad that i didn't get to vote :-(

Bee OK, Friday, 29 April 2011 02:10 (fourteen years ago)

Totally missed this poll too. I like how the ending of "Every Second Counts" (one of the few songs to feature a singer cracking himself up mid-line; REM's "Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight" is another one) is different depending on the format. I want to say I've given this album a lot more time than I may normally have due to Christgau's review - an A - but truth be told I don't listen to a lot of "Brotherhood. Or "Low Life," for that matter.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 29 April 2011 03:10 (fourteen years ago)

BTW, I love how slop city New Order can be live, but even by those standards those clips above are a mess. It takes nearly half the song for "Broken Promise" to reveal itself.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 29 April 2011 03:13 (fourteen years ago)

the little bit of feedback in 'as it is when it was' is weird - guess they were listening to mary chain at the time?

br8080 (dayo), Saturday, 30 April 2011 00:43 (fourteen years ago)

Good results.

In Praise of...Brotherhood by New Order

br8080 (dayo), Saturday, 30 April 2011 03:19 (fourteen years ago)

DJP has changed his story over the years:

I had this album on cassette for about 3 days before I lost it. I suspect that I would have loved it if I'd been able to hang onto it.

Totally missed this poll too.

It was accidentally on ILE until about 24 hours before it ended.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 April 2011 03:23 (fourteen years ago)

oh, that's how.

Bee OK, Saturday, 30 April 2011 03:41 (fourteen years ago)

Missed it too. "All Day Long" is the greatest New Order song so I would've voted for that. This is their 2nd best album (after Low-Life) and Movement is stinky, quite possibly their worst. frogbs gets at my sentiments nicely: "I didn't know people actually liked Movement
I'm not really crazy about JD outside of "Disorder" and "Isolation" so a watered-down version of that sound is not appealing at all to me" If I'm being brutally honest with myself, I only have time for JD at their most disco/New Order, i.e., the songs above and "She's Lost Control."

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 30 April 2011 05:47 (fourteen years ago)

Listened to it a lot (on the school bus) back in the day, on a cassette with this on side B and the Something Wild soundtrack on side A. All I remember is Every Little Counts and the needle-scratch ending.
