This bunch leaves a rather easy choice for me, with such a great song as "Save The Last Dance For Me" to vote for.

Might have gone for some other Everlys track, but not this one. Also missing "Apache", of course, but no instrumentals have been included in the book anyway.

Shirelles is my inclination, but I should hear more of these. I only know it and the Everlys and Drifters tracks.

"Shakin' All Over" is actually quite good, as an example of early British originally written rock'n'roll.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Monday, 2 May 2011 08:59 (fourteen years ago)

Shirelles will and should dominate this.

Johnny Kidd from the Shirelles. Kidd was the only Brit rock'n'roll singer who made records that stand alongside the Americans.

This is between the Everlys and Shirelles for me, and it's probably the Shirelles, only because I don't much like the Everlys' version of their own song . . .

The Shirelles, Everlys, and Drifters all have songs I like much, much more, but as is, the Shirelles. If you look at Ella Fitzgerald/Johnny Kidd/1960 quickly, like I did, they may blur together as JFK in your mind.

Shirelles for me, no second thoughts.

Shirelles.

"Shakin' All Over" was a favorite in R.E.M.'s live sets c. 1980-81 -- great song!

Shirelles for me, no second thoughts.

Five days seems like a long time for some of these early 60s years. Maybe we could truncate the voting process till we get to The Beatles & British Invasion?

I've got to mention the Guess Who cover, when they were Chad Allen & the Expressions--they had the big hit.

I never realized "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" came out so early! I would have guessed '62. Amazing how much that does NOT sound like a '50s record.

The Shirelles vs. The Drifters. Goffin/King vs. Pomus/Shuman. NYC vs. NYC. Going with the Drifters on this one.

I guess it was basically the first in a series of rather similar-sounding records that ended with "Leader Of The Pack" and some of Phil Spector's best girl group productions.

Drifters versus Folkes Brothers for me - went Drifters.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 12:30 (fourteen years ago)

Seems like "Save the Last Dance" and "Will You Still Love Me" have two of the most beautiful melodies of all time. Still, I'm not familiar with all these songs so I'll withhold my vote until I youtube the rest.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

otm about Save the Last Dance and Will You Still Love Me. both the Shirelles and the Drifters are A+++ singles artists for me

gospodin simmel, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

Both are obviously great performances, but I guess being beautiful melodies is more courtesy of the writers, both of which legendary Brill Building writer duos.

The Great Esma Redzepova, especially considering she was only 14 when she recorded it.
