still the best voice in rock.
― Bee OK, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 04:55 (fourteen years ago)
is that the actual cover
― markers, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 05:09 (fourteen years ago)
yes
― Bee OK, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 05:17 (fourteen years ago)
The title track is available as a free download from their website. I've only listened to this once and found it quite dull, hopefully it grows. I'm hoping this new album is a return to the sound of Z which is an album I still listen to a lot.
― Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 08:46 (fourteen years ago)
ugh z blew ass. hopefully they'll return to it still moves.
― impeccable suit shit stained underwear (thebingo), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 16:26 (fourteen years ago)
Really like the title track. Frankly I don't care what direction they go ad long as it's away from Evil Urges. (tbf there are a small handful of great tracks in that record, but the other two thirds blows).
― scott pgwp (pgwp), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 19:53 (fourteen years ago)
How can you even tell? He just sounds like another one of the guys fashionably singing from the bottom of a well.
Gratuitous reverb = cowardice. It also sounds lame and will sound just as dated as Roni Size in a few years.
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 21:57 (fourteen years ago)
Z was great
Evil Urges wasn't
that cover is really bad
― markers, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 22:02 (fourteen years ago)
Jim James has been using that effect for 15 years and six albums... It wasn't a trend when they first came out. Also if you can't hear that he has a phenomenal voice then you're willfully not listening.
― scott pgwp (pgwp), Wednesday, 4 May 2011 05:06 (fourteen years ago)
Oh yeah? His voice is phenomenal, is it? I should pay more attention.
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Wednesday, 4 May 2011 11:12 (fourteen years ago)
title track is their finest since "wordless chorus" and "gideon." when have mmj album sleeves not been shit? evil urges has aged badley, but if this is anywhere within the range of their first four, I'll be just fine w/ it.
― fistful of meta (Pillbox), Wednesday, 4 May 2011 11:23 (fourteen years ago)
badly, even

Odd. Everything here is pretty steady-as-she-goes as there is little you could characterize as either fiery or mournful. The album has the maturity of band that know they don't have to try out a bunch of new songs styles or fill each track with every little trick in the(ir) book. The "in" trick for this album seems to an excercise in nuance. Airy, spacious arrangements are interspersed with countless samples and various sonic splashes that demonstrate a band who've become craftsman at shaping songs. This all makes it very easy on the ears, as any angularity remaining in their sound has been sanded-down to a splinter-free, baby's-bottom-smooth finish. Everything is soft. Too soft. Where's the passion? The up-tempo numbers are flaccid and the ballads just seem schmaltzy and without purpose. For a band who should be sounding mature, it just sounds, well, old.

A. Really glad this is, overall, a welcome rebound from Evil Urges, which was 50-60% embarrassing.B. That said, the "Black Metal" song contradicts statement A.C. I like this album best when I'm not paying too close attention to it. The few times I've honed in on the lyrics, they've been fairly abysmal. (See again "Black Metal", "Outta My System", and whichever song as the line "I feel wonderful is how I feel".)

"victory dance" is the only song that's made an impression so far

yep they're on
― markers, Wednesday, 1 June 2011 01:50 (fourteen years ago)
So this is still not a patch on the early albums, but so goddamn much better than Evil Urges that is sounds like a classic. Its not, but my bar was lowered enough by that last mess that I'm liking this.
― 'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 01:56 (fourteen years ago)
it's pretty cool they let the fans vote for the encore song "Steam Engine."
― Bee OK, Wednesday, 1 June 2011 02:33 (fourteen years ago)
Erykah Badu just stepped on stage with My Morning Jacket
― Bee OK, Wednesday, 1 June 2011 03:21 (fourteen years ago)
that was pretty awesome, looks like they will do another song
― Bee OK, Wednesday, 1 June 2011 03:24 (fourteen years ago)
and now a third song with Badu singing, very cool encore.
― Bee OK, Wednesday, 1 June 2011 03:29 (fourteen years ago)
i guess i'm the only one watching this live. anyways they are on their forth song together. incredible.
― Bee OK, Wednesday, 1 June 2011 03:34 (fourteen years ago)
and now the BIG encore.
ok, i'll shut up now but...
― Bee OK, Wednesday, 1 June 2011 03:47 (fourteen years ago)

― markers, Thursday, 2 June 2011 01:49 (fourteen years ago)
NPR gave this album its usual equivocal praise ("When it's good, it's very good" and so on).
― The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 2 June 2011 02:06 (fourteen years ago)
That's about what it deserves. It's not always good but it's occasionally really great.
― scott pgwp (pgwp), Thursday, 2 June 2011 03:38 (fourteen years ago)
another great one from last night, Erykah Badu and My Morning Jacket doing "Wordless Chorus."https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUWBOdK7h1w&feature=youtu.be
― Bee OK, Thursday, 2 June 2011 05:40 (fourteen years ago)
from the preview i heard, i dont like it. need to spend more time
― Bert Macklin, F.B.I. (thebingo), Thursday, 2 June 2011 13:51 (fourteen years ago)
been rocking this alot lately. It's pretty high quality stuff for a band on cruise control. Their best since the one before their last one!
― Cosmo Vitelli, Monday, 27 June 2011 22:58 (fourteen years ago)
Does anyone else here a little enio morricone influence on this record? - in the opening and then a couple times later on, there's a sweeping cinematic vibe.
― BrianB, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 02:59 (fourteen years ago)
Maybe a little bit in "black metal"...
― BrianB, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 03:01 (fourteen years ago)
is this anywhere as good as z?
― markers, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 03:11 (fourteen years ago)
yeah but it's not a patch on ISM
― Cosmo Vitelli, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 03:16 (fourteen years ago)
i've heard part of it still moves but not all of it, iirc -- i played the shit out of z in 2005 though and didn't like evil urges much
― markers, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 03:22 (fourteen years ago)
This is as good if not better than z. Comparing either of them to it still moves is like comparing rock in the 70's to rock in the 80's. It changed, and I like how MMJ evolved but evil urges was a big turd.
― BrianB, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 06:25 (fourteen years ago)
I've become very conflicted about Evil Urges in the last few weeks. It's easily got the highest quotient of awful, awful, spectacularly awful songs if any of their albums. But if you delete those from the running order, you're still left with a really strong little mini-album: title track, both versions of "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream," "Smokin' from Shootin'," maybe one or two others. Circuital is definitely more consistently good, but only one or two tracks jump out at me as straight up excellent.
― scott pgwp (pgwp), Tuesday, 28 June 2011 16:09 (fourteen years ago)
this album has really been slept on this year. love hearing it.
― Bee OK, Friday, 8 July 2011 05:24 (fourteen years ago)
