Arsonists C/D

Partly in tribute to the truncation of Steve Lamacq's career (I get the feeling I'm the only person on ILX who'll defend him, so I won't bother), I listened to the Arsonists two albums the other day ("Blaze" and "Pyromaniax" were never off the evening session back in mid 1999, hearing those two songs still makes me think about passing my exams).

Anyway... "As The World Burns" is the best hip-hop record in my collection bar none. A combination of street vocals, playground stupidity, Godlike derrangedness... ah, it's just fucking great. Anyway, then their two best members left, they released "Date of Birth", and that has the grand total of four good tracks. I'd write more now, but I'm trying to work out why the fuck Jamie Kennedy has a career.

Anyway, yeah, whatever. Opinions, or somesuch.

Damn, for a moment I thought this was a thread on arsonist musicians...

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Friday, 30 August 2002 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

well, all i can add is that i heard the song 'the session' on that babu beat junkies vol.1 thing and liked it, so i bought the 12".

they came to my school last year and kidz seemed to like them but to me they were indistinct. not bad. not good. just sorta fun. my friend had a house party after the show and the Arsonists came and freestyled a bit. (of course the stage is the last place to go to assess the talents of a hiphop act.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 31 August 2002 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

on this topic i can only agree with something dj quik once said: 'when your favorite rap album is on matador ITS TIME TO TAKE A LONG LOOK AT YOUR FUCKING EXCUSE FOR A LIFE'

simon trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 31 August 2002 03:44 (twenty-three years ago)

...but mary timony! and red snapper!

hoobastank, Saturday, 31 August 2002 03:46 (twenty-three years ago)

(both excellent rap artists on matador)

hoobastank, Saturday, 31 August 2002 03:47 (twenty-three years ago)

whats up matador? ho ho. i like the idea of having some rap records on the roster, but i can't think of any reason WHY except to look cool, which is a dumb reason. i can't imagine that matador is very good at marketing rap music

ron (ron), Saturday, 31 August 2002 03:48 (twenty-three years ago)

did dj quik really say that??

ron (ron), Saturday, 31 August 2002 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

well he posted it to the blogs thread but graham deleted it

simon trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 31 August 2002 03:51 (twenty-three years ago)

although ron i do sort of like the session too even if it has the whitest rhymes by non white people since biz markie!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 31 August 2002 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

dj quik is soooooo nu-ilm

i'm gonna listen right now to 'no rubber no backstage pass"

ron (ron), Saturday, 31 August 2002 03:59 (twenty-three years ago)

and speaking of that, chubb rock's got some pretty white lyrics!!

ron (ron), Saturday, 31 August 2002 04:01 (twenty-three years ago)

i become monolithic, then rip it, the remains i sip it
my hat i tip it, "CHEERIO, KID!" and here i go!!
off beat slackers... platinum mediocre rappers
with the corporate backers ... crab SAG actors

(... means i cant quite make the word/s out)

something like that, plus he says 'bourgeois' twice in that song

ron (ron), Saturday, 31 August 2002 04:19 (twenty-three years ago)

'when your favorite rap album is on matador ITS TIME TO TAKE A LONG LOOK AT YOUR FUCKING EXCUSE FOR A LIFE'.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 31 August 2002 05:52 (twenty-three years ago)

good point dom its the thread where i chump you for liking indie hiphop!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 31 August 2002 06:17 (twenty-three years ago)

You could have just said "indie rap is crap". Because "rap" and "crap" rhyme, you see? It's what all the cool kids are doing.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 31 August 2002 06:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm with Dom - well, I wouldn't say As The World Burns is the best hip hop album I have, but it is a great album. I bought their next the day it came out, and it's very poor indeed.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 31 August 2002 09:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Arguments about what type of rap is better than another, usually containing a fair smattering of inverse-snobbery, really bore the fuck out of me. Please stop it. Now. There is nothing intrinsically superior about commercial hip-hop to 'indie' hip-hop, and vice versa.

I like the Arsonists, by the way.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 1 September 2002 12:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Please stop it. Now.

yes, mummy.

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 1 September 2002 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Good, now don't do it again, or I shall be forced to give you a spanking.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 1 September 2002 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

six years pass...

Because "rap" and "crap" rhyme, you see?

and what, Friday, 30 January 2009 00:42 (seventeen years ago)

I don't like them because they glorify fire-related felonies. Arson, as cool as it sounds when "rappers" talk about it, is not a joke. It causes untold damage to personal property every year, as well as countless needless deaths.

Now, the Alcoholics, there's a group I can get with. Alcoholism never hurt nobody. We need to bring back that kind of positivity to rap.
