Early Grateful Dead Studio Albums Poll

Pre-American Beauty, so basically when they were a "SF psychedelic rock" band I guess. There is something distinctive about this trio albums that they'd never have in the studio again. They often sounded like a garage rock band, for one thing.

grateful dead, though i'm not sure i could justify why; it sounds like the most accurate attempt at summing up their ethos in studio form, somehow, despite their all hating it, apparently. also best collection of tunes, maybe; or best collection of tunes i can imagine wanting to hear as such, and not in live versions, or at least that i can imagine most often coming close to wanting to hear as such.

Aoxomoxoa, by quite a bit. The first two are, outside of the Terrapin to Go To Heaven Run, my least favorite Dead studio albums.

can't choose, but have to say "the golden road (to unlimited devotion)" is 'nuggets'-worthy. one of the stronger first tracks on a 60s psych album. it wouldn't sound out of place on moby grape's debut

Aoxomoxoa by a mile

Aoxomoxoa. i've barely listened to the first record...maybe i should give it another go.

tylerw, Friday, 6 May 2011 14:08 (fourteen years ago)

I think I've only ever heard the remix. I need to find a DL of the original mix floating out there in the ether somewhere.

Stomp! in the name of love (WmC), Friday, 6 May 2011 14:12 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, didn't know that the original 1969 mix of Aoxomoxoa was finally released in that Rhino LP set last fall. def need to track that down. Anthem is my favorite Dead album because of the fuzzy acid-drenched production and, though I love the clarity of the '71 mix, have always wanted to hear how they took it even furthur in 16 tracks. especially curious about "What's Become of the Baby"

herbal bert (herb albert), Friday, 6 May 2011 14:12 (fourteen years ago)

The difference is pretty noticeable between the original and the remix particularly on "what's become of the baby." .
I love the first album, too. I love their speedy take on folk rock pop. It's like the Byrds on more acid.
Anthem pales in comparison to Live/Dead and Two From the Vault, imo.

Anthem is awesome but chiming in with all the Aoxomoxoa love here - one of the few once-weird things that will forever retain its weirdness. "Mountains of the Moon" just so out-there. I believe I will listen to a live version from '68 right now in fact

Wow, this original mix has some very cool elements. Why was the heavenly choir stripped out of "Mountains of the Moon" and the barbershop quartet ending of "Doin' That Rag," I ask you.

Stomp! in the name of love (WmC), Friday, 6 May 2011 16:02 (fourteen years ago)

otoh, the original "China Cat Sunflower" is a fucking mess.

Stomp! in the name of love (WmC), Friday, 6 May 2011 16:05 (fourteen years ago)

holy shit, this mix

Kinda hoping to stumble across a copy of the original mix of Aoxomoxoa. Stupid hippies, remixing shit all the time.

Right on.

Gott Punch, if you were to happen to go to google and just happened to stumble into your keyboard so that it searched for "aoxomoxoa original mix rapidshare," I bet you'd find what I found what you're looking for.
