i'm not thoroughly familiar with it as a genre (besides the 'rebirth of the cool 2' tape i got for two dollars used a few years ago) but conceptually, 'acid jazz' seems like a very good thing. pop-friendly cinematic jazz with touches of world music, hiphop, and dance - who could argue with listening to that? but then, it's often executed without any of the excitement or spontanaety of actual jazz, piecing together studio trumpeters in protools and so on. the spectre of 'dance you can't dance to' plus the whole triphop/lounge hipster association will give it much slander here, but personally i'll stick up for it here. don't know enough to recommend what you should search and destroy though.

Search: well, I searched out all those seminal early-70s genre- inventing Funk Inc albums, and...

Destroy: Funk Inc.

I've been reliably informed by an ex-Acid jazz fan that it is indeed nothing but baja pullovers and Jamiroquai.

Askin because I'm just now falling in love w/"Get A Move On" by Mr. Scruff, from like 2 years ago. which sounds suspiciously like acid jazz and is on ninjatune no less.

Jamiroquai is more than enough acid jazz for anyone's lifetime. For some reason the whole idea makes me think of Tricky's "Brand New You're Retro," which I was always convinced was a dressing-down of the Brand New Heavies.

ned:

1) i always thought that song was about rage against the machine.

2) i like the brand new heavies.

3) 'aftermath' is on my acid jazz tape.

It was about RATM? Damn, I like that song even more now!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

as the story goes, zack de la whats-his- name approached tricky with the offer of working together, tricky said 'fuck n and wrote the song. nice, eh?

ethan, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

or, more sensibly, he said 'fuck no'.
