There seems to be loads of them about. Which ones are worth investigating?

I think that the Mixmag Live! Hardcore Techno Classics mix is not bad, especially as it contains "Playing with knives". As for un-mixed comps, Moonshine's Classic Acid comp. is ok. I also have the cheekily titled "welcome to the jungle" (quality) comp. that has "Original Nuttah", "Dead Dread", "Warning", "Jazz Thing" and others from the 95-96 period. That is all I can say, so I will be just as interested in upcoming answers as you.

SEARCH:

drum & bass selection vol. 1-5 mixed by dj hype
welcome to the jungle (atrociously mastered, but worth it for the tunes.)
xl records: the american chapter
speed limit 140 bpm....vol. 1-5 are fucking essential, the later stuff less so but still worth it.
a history of our world: breakbeat and jungle ultra-mix vol. 1 & 2 mixed by dj db (can't stress these enough)
moving shadow 10th anniversary collection: best. label. ever.
united dance: designer collection mixed by dj hype. atrocious cover. maybe best jungle mix evah, though.
classic rave vol. 1 & 2 (on moonshine)
rave alert (on telstar...in print?)

"Routes From The Jungle" on Virgin is pretty great. There was another brilliant one, "This Is Jungle" (I think), released around 94/95 which is probably impossible to get hold of, but completely classic all the same.

Any thoughts on Nukleuz records hardhouse stuff?

kiwi, Saturday, 31 August 2002 06:56 (twenty-three years ago)

The "History of Our World" comps were preceded by a pair of comps called "History of Hardcore" vols. 1 and 2. It's actually more like a history of Moving Shadow and Urban Shakedown, but these are also totally essential - especially the second, which has got renegade snares, the helicopter tune, cloud 9 by jazzmin, dred bass, terrorist, etc.

Also look for "Sub Base Classics" on Moonshine. It's in the same vein as the "History of..." comps, but it's got some real weird stuff too, like a D'Cruze remix by DJ SS that sounds like DJ Assault's entire playbook. It also gives you a real good feel for the "evolution" of hardcore by starting out with a bunch of breakbeat house tunes by Rachel Wallace and Mad Ragga Jon (Carter).

On the subject of DJ Assault, Gareth at 1471 made that connection a good two years ago. I think Assault sounds more Moving Shadow than Reinforced, though.

Isn't Nukleuz connected to Reinforced? Are there any comps of Reinforced stuff (other than Enforcers)?

blackmarket presents best of drum n' bass, i might have got the title wrong. it's good. there are four, i think.

routes from the jungle. someone already said that one, i think. artcore is kind of like it. artcore: ambient jungle.

jungle book: intelligent minds of jungle vol 1.

if you can find Production House's own compilation released about 9/10 years ago for gods sake snap it up - contains all the early tracks by House Crew, Baby D, DMS and DJ Solo - Production House were one of the best labels for general rave/hardcore tracks at the time

If you can get any of the Illegal Piratre Radio compis from the Strictly Underground Corporation they come recommended by the Dirty Vicar. I like the tracks on the end of each disc where the compilers tell you all about the other compis they have available and promise to break the legs of people who pirate their products.

Edward IMHO if youre after hard dance or hardhouse it doesnt get much better than Nukleuz records. All their compilations are excellent- very good shit. Favorite hardhouse DJ's : Andy Farley, Nick Sentience and Phil Reynolds .Ive been out of the London clubbing scene for a few years so Im probably lost touch a bit there.

Also try the compilation "Trade"- Past/ Present/ Future to get a taste of Tony De Vit.

Enjoy

If you can find it, Concrete Jungle Vol.1 (1993) is an *excellent* "golden era" jungle comp, loads of great tracks from the Whitehouse label.

As far as recent hardhouse/hardtrance compilations go, if you get the Dance Valley 2002 cd mixed by Yoji Biomehanika you're basically set. Some typical Nukleuz tracks, but a bit more varied than the average BK/Sentience mix (although these are not too bad). It also has the massive Reloop "Fucking Society" track. Let's just say that there have been many excellent hardhouse comps over the last four years. Also search: livesets from Tom Harding, JP, Captain Tinrib, Lab 4.

History Pt. 1 & 2, the DB-mixed ones, are the two best jungle albums ever. Period. Endlessly listenable, great fun, educational, the works.

Seek out the first seven vols. of Speed Limit 140 BPM Plus on Moonshine also.

All the 'old skool masters' 2 cd comps are pretty good although you do wish the ratpack would just shut up once in a while, they were issued before the current commercial 'fashion comps' (ministry presents etc) came out so do have a nice rang of stuff on them.

el wanko, Sunday, 1 September 2002 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

if you can't find some of those comps (i think the DB and Hype ones are long OOP - someone please tell me i'm wrong!), check out some recent ones: jungle massive mixed by DJ Hype (40 classics incl. Super Sharp Shooter, Dred Bass, The Lighter, Renegade Snares VIP, Terrorist, Valley of the Unknown, etc); the big rewind mixed by Nicky Blackmarket (Here Come The Drumz, R-Type, Bloodclot Artattack). also, if you can find it, the Torque compilation on No U Turn is seminal techstep.

... all lovingly ripped from his master tapes at 320 kbps, with original artwork to boot.

Pretty interesting range of sub-styles on display here, from piano-matic diva screamups to early dark d'n'b.

You may not know the names of the artists or tracks, but if you're of a certain age you'll recognize the tunes.

Oops. Meant to make this a new thread.

The artist in question is the old-skool rave/happy hardcore/d 'n'b producer, Luna-C.

Well I got the Double LP set actually but still.

Tim F, Monday, 20 October 2014 10:06 (eleven years ago)

^^ Great compilation.

Did the release format of adding a second mix-cd die along with jungle/dnb? That was really en vogue for a while. Or is this still thing in other genres?

definite classic, predicting a solid 8/10 from the p-fork boys (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 20 October 2014 10:34 (eleven years ago)

Garage definitely still had it for a while.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Monday, 20 October 2014 12:01 (eleven years ago)

I've never heard that comp specifically but I have 90% of it on other stuff.
