― "Hungry clouds swag on the deep." — William Blake (bernard snowy), Saturday, 7 May 2011 18:03 (fourteen years ago)
I read somewhere that the people making the original tracks - e.g Afrojack - are trying to distance themselves from this Moombahton thing, which is essentially just Dutch house at 33 instead of 45 with extra percussion, or tracks produced designed to sound like it. Which is a shame, because this stuff seems more fun to dance to (at least, in my bedroom).
I also read that different moombahgenres are cropping up like "moombahcore" and the aforemention "moombahstep", but this really does seem to be splitting hairs just for the sake of being ahead of the curve.
I posted this in the rolling pop thread but it obviously belongs here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFqE_9Mw_Lc
It's probably the best moombahanything I've heard so far, because it sounds more like an actual song than just the gimmick of being slowed-down.

i like this stuff. even the bad stuff is kinda fun to hear. can't say that about everything. (i often can't tell the difference between good and bad dubstep. or maybe even u.k. funky for that matter. but to be fair i haven't heard a lot of it. with this stuff its obvious who actually took the time to make something interesting and who is just slapping poorly made stuff up on youtube. but the bad moomba versions of, like, dolly parton songs are at least worth one laugh.)

kind of old news, this genre. i like a lot of it, but still.

"kind of old news, this genre. i like a lot of it, but still."
less than two years from the legendary high school "skipping party" until i heard about it. that's way new to me!
"Moombahton (pronounced /ˌmoombaˈtoʊn/) is a genre of electronic dance music that was created by American dj/producer Dave Nada [1] at a high school homecoming "skipping party" for his younger cousin in Washington, D.C., in the fall of 2009.[2] The specific event that stimulated NADA's development of the Moombahton genre was his slowing the Afrojack remix of the Silvio Ecomo & DJ Chuckie song "Moombah" to 108 beats per minute. Because that tempo nears that of the reggaeton, Nada created the neologism "Moombahton" by combining the title of the track "Moombah" and the "ton" ending of the word "reggaeton" and applied it to his new genre."
― scott seward, Sunday, 8 May 2011 01:10 (fourteen years ago)
plus, no thread until now. which is why i started one.
funny thing to say, given that there's been scant ILM discussion, just a few stray mentions in the DC and afro-latin threads...

Thinking about what has to happen to create an entirely new genre of music is mind breaking. Like, what? WHAT? Are we really done creating entirely new stuff and now just merging everything we like into one massive mess of borderless influences? Pretty much! And that’s okay. It keeps things moving and allows for a reverence for what came before. That’s precisely what is happening with DJ Melo’s moombahton edit of “Told Ya,” a track by Sandro Silva and Isa GT. It’s not especially new sounding, but it’s not supposed to be. Instead, it’s a choppy mixed genre piece of hard percussion that comes from Mad Decent’s Blow Your Head Vol. 2: Dave Nada Presents… Moombahton. Treat it like an essential document of a burgeoning new hybrid genre, or treat it as some shit you can just put on to make people actually dance at your next party.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 20:43 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, treat it like shit! no, wait, treat it like that shit you usually play! no, that's not right...shit on it! damn, hold on, i'll think of it...treat it as some shit you can just put on like an old shitty coat or something! there, that's more like it.

Ayres: How did you come up with Moombahton? It’s such a weird idea, usually dance producers take slower songs and speed them up, not the other way around. I’m imagining you playing an Afrojack 12″ on 33 rpm instead of 45, by accident.
I probably shouldn’t tell this story, but here goes. Lo ciento Tia Sona! My little cousin Jean-Pierre is a huge Nadastrom fan and he’s about to graduate from high school. Him and his boy Mike are notorious for throwing these wild skipping parties. For those that don’t know, “skipping parties” are when you throw a house party mid school day and you tell all your friends that morning, and everyone who knows about the party skips school to go wild out. Word of mouth only too, no internet/paper trail. Anyhow, around their homecoming last fall they asked if I could DJ one of their skipping parties, and I, being the supportive/bad seed cousin that I am, agreed. They had a beat up system, but like 329439 speakers all over Mike’s basement so it sounded huge. They told me it would last about an hour because cops usually bust it up. The house/neighborhood was right by the woods so it was convenient to bounce and hide if need be. Anyhow, so here we are at Mike’s empty house around 11:30AM and everything is set up. Kids start pouring in around noon and the music starts. Mike and JP are dropping bachata and moving into reggaeton. This shit was getting crazy. Twenty minutes in and the place is PACKED, all Latin kids and everyone is fuuuucked up. Haha! I was gettin mad nervous (oldest dude there) and JP was like, “Yo you gotta go on soon primo!” and I’m thinking, fuck I cant play house/techno shit, I’ll get jumped. So I had the idea of slowing down some of the tropical/Dutch house stuff I had on CDs. Afrojack’s “Moombah Remix” being the biggest tune, I said fuck it and turned that shit down to 108 bpm. JP told all his people about me so bamas started cheering when I went on. And that’s when shit popped the fuck off. The minute that T-t-t-t-turn up the bass! part came in and dropped the place went insane! I played it all the way til the end and then did the same to Sidney Samson’s “Riverside” and EVERYONE is yelling the “Riverside motherfucker!” part and shit was just too much. I was losin’ it and told myself, I need to make some edits of this shit! And thus, Moombahton was born. Long story short, neighbors complained a good 15 minutes into my set and threatened to call the cops. Half the party started to bounce and then a few minutes later Mike yells, “Cops on the way!” and like clockwork this party was done. All in about an hour. I parked down the street and drove both my cousin JP and Mike back to school so they could catch the end of their classes as if nothing ever happened.

hey, i wasn't trying to be snide or an asshole above, sorry if it came off that way.
also, this sort of 'new genre' speak kind of makes me cringe. it started with slowed dutch house (with some awesome samples thrown on often, yes). DJs have been doing stuff like this at parties forever. spinning UK tribal and hard techno at similar BPMs is equally WO PARTY TIME, in my personal DJing experience.

The whole of the Nadia Oh album is really good, fun in a party-girl trash pop way.
I think "No Bueno" really works as a song because her plain, flat singing conveys the resigned sadness of a girl who can't stop herself from falling into a doomed relationship, and the way she strains her voice is her pleading to her own sense of hopelessness.

It's inevitable, though as with serious, moody versions of big beat it might end up being classified as something else.

yeah generally a good amount of the moombahsoul stuff is in that direction, a good number of the tracks from Heartbreak and some from Munchi. Some of the new tracks in progress Nadastrom dropped last month were really dubbed out and dark with much more of a techno sound palette.
