Tim Buckley and Jeff Buckley -- in what order did you hear them?

Message Bookmarked

A question arose on the Jeff Buckley Classic or Dud? thread of the number of folks who got turned on to Tim Buckley's recordings only after hearing Jeff Buckley. Tim, of course, being the folk/jazz singer/songwriter with releases from 1966-1974, and his son, Jeff Buckley, the alternative rock artist with releases from 1993-1998.

It is intended that discussions of their individual merit be sequestered to the appropriate thread, so please limit your commentary, if that is at all possible.

You've probably heard Buckley's version of "Hallelujah" somewhere sometime w/in the last few years. It's in the air.

er, Jeff Buckley's version

Call me bonkers, but I don't consider them as being 'linkified', really.

Jeff is not Julian Lennon, his voice is his own.

They both play(ed) acoustic, that's about it.

Mark G, Monday, 9 May 2011 08:24 (fourteen years ago)

... true, but how many people got into John Lennon because they heard Julian first? Probably less than the number of people who got into Minnie Riperton when they heard her daughter was SNL's Maya Rudolph? Or from Liza to Judy?

suspecterrain, Monday, 9 May 2011 09:23 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, but John being pretty much ubiquitous, it'd be impossible to do that, especially now.

I doubt that anyone got into Minnie because of Maya, but then I don't know Maya.

Liza to Judy is probably a high number because of the reference/reverence/relevance link.

Knew Tim from mid 80s onwards, think I picked up Starsailor in '86. Picked up on him a lot more after getting into Dream Letter in '90. Picked up his cds throughout early 90s.
So it was cos of that that I went to see Jeff when he first played dublin in '94. Was very impressed , solo singer with a Telecaster that he was doing surprising things with.
Then really liked the band with Mick Grondahl etc.

Only recently hearing anything of a backlash against Jeff. Surprised by a bunch of people at the olidarity camp calling Grace bad music.

Stevolende, Monday, 9 May 2011 13:48 (fourteen years ago)

I think the problem some people have with Jeff, certainly I do, is that it all sounds a bit callow and immature. It's essentially music for teenagers to moon about the meaning of life to.

I have Tim's "Blue Afternoon" and it's nice (played properly one time).

I have Jeff's "Live at Sin'e" and started to play it on a half-hour drive home, but 10 mins from home the motorway was jammed and so I ended uo listening to the whole thing.

Which is probably the best way to hear it: Thought it came over as a great gig, enjoyed it, but then nothing else was quite as cool as that time.

I do get amazed by how many people cite him as an influence, of course precious few would have anything to do with what influenced *him*, but hey that's how it goes.

I sought out Tim Buckley based only on "Song to the Siren" as covered by This Mortail Coil. Quickly deciding that I *strenuously* preferred the cover over Buckley's lamentably wobbly original, I didn't give him further thought until hearing Jeff Buckley. Before hearing Jeff Buckely, I wanted to hate him for being a pretty-boy cashing in on his dad's name. And then I heard the Grace and forgot about all that nonsense. And then his mother lambasted me online for once recommending the downloading of Jeff's cover of "I Against I" by ye olde Bad Brains.

Alex in NYC, Monday, 9 May 2011 20:29 (fourteen years ago)

yeah my first exposure to any Tim Buckley music was a live cover of "Song to the Siren" by a singer named Chris Lee and that's kind of overshadowed the original or anything else for me.

Heard Tim first, kinda liked some of his stuff. Am always a bit suspicious of anyone who clearly gets more attention than they would have at the start of their career because their mom or dad was famous, even though in this case it was a mostly-absentee dad. First time I heard Jeff was when I punched up "Lover, I Should Have Come Over" on a Tower Records headphone listening station (remember those?) and was mesmerized. Remember seeing an newspaper advert for his upcoming show at the 9:30 club in DC. Decided to wait until he had another album under his belt before seeing him live. Will never forgive myself for missing that show.

Hasn't the average age of new artists (especially rock artists) been steadily increasing over the last 50 years though? In the 60's you had kids who hadn't even finished school on Top of the Pops, whereas most people now have done 4 years of college, maybe a few years in a dead-end job, maybe a masters, before they get signed.

I'm not -- I was 12 when Grace was released and most of ILM seems younger than me or no more than a couple years older, and I feel like you'd have to have been an adult/pretty up on music to have known about Tim well before '94.

I knew there was a significant contingent of young people on ILM, I just see a lot of regulars who are over 40 and "pretty up" on music. I guess I caught myself off guard realising that Grace is nearly 20 years old.

Tim's stuff was also out of print for a good while; I didn't hear of him until the reissues around 1990 or so.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 16 May 2011 01:11 (fourteen years ago)

I definitely knew about Tim first, in one of those "100 Greatest Albums of All Time" books from 1987, but nothing about its skeletal writeup of Starsailor compelled me to check it out. Seven years later, there's Grace, so I got into that first, and then dug Starsailor (right before it went back out of print, apparently).
