Does anyone care about Vertical Horizon?

Is this the most forgettable band of all time? Banal lyrics sung with such earnest. Songs played 4 times during an 8 hour work shift that you are sick of hearing after the first day you hear them until you want to grab the damn radio and throw it to the floor and jump up and down on it until you can no longer hear that guy that looks like that guy in that band Live. Or is it just me?

That's a bizarre question.

Interchangeable with Seven Mary Three, Marcy Playground, 3 Doors Down, Nickelback, Collective Soul, Dishwalla, the Gin Blossoms, Semisonic, etc. etc. etc.

Alex you forgot the ghastly Matchbox 20, who I thought Vertical Horizon were when I first heard them on (Xfm) radio a few years ago.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to cite them, but by the hand of Carlos Santana, they managed to outlive most of their contemporaries (tho' I'd wager their days are numbered once again). Likewise Third Eye Blind, who dropped the ball in prototypical sophomore slump style.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

who buys this music? how do these bands exist? sometimes I think it is adult music for soccer moms or whatever (lazy) stereotype, and then I think it is music for college kids who don't know any better. surely it can't be both?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Vertical who? (hahaha)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Once upon a time I had to review this band, and I'm pretty sure I savaged it completely while stating that it was probably going to become huge. Now, I can't even remember what they sound like. I don't know what that says about them (or me).

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Verizon Witless

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you hear me now? Good!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

More contenders for the Vertical Horizon title: Better Than Ezra, Lifehouse, Default,....

Soon to join them (god willing): Incubus, Dashboard Confessional

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay Alex, now you're just lumping together a whole bunch of bands you dislike regardless of what they actually sound like!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Fair enough, Dan. I guess Incubus and Dashboard Confessional don't really belong in the same category -- but here's hoping they both go the same way as Vertical Horizon (i.e. the express train to complete oblivion).

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

dont think i ever heard this band tho sorry

r|t|c, Monday, 13 September 2010 12:38 (fourteen years ago)

shit was everywhere -- i used to be on swim team in h.s. & they would play this shit every. morning. over the speakers while we swam laps

*sets trend* (deej), Monday, 13 September 2010 13:39 (fourteen years ago)

this was a godawful song and i smh whenever i hear ppl defend it. that last chorus in which the singer SURPRISES THE LISTENER by making it "*i* am everything you want" etc etc is so incredibly nauseating. yeah real clever.

teledyldonix, Monday, 13 September 2010 21:27 (fourteen years ago)

Everything You Want still gets heavy rotation twelve years later, I thought for sure it would be one of those singles to fall into obscurity after it first came out.

Breezy Summer Jam (MintIce), Monday, 11 July 2011 23:25 (thirteen years ago)

vertical horizon is a dumbass name for a band.

m0stlyClean, Tuesday, 12 July 2011 00:00 (thirteen years ago)

You know that "bands you confuse with each other because they have similar names" thread?

Vertical Horizon always makes me think of Verizon....

(note for Brits: that's an ubiquitous US phone company whose unsolicited adverts show up in your postal mail twice a week, partly owned by Vodafone)

I'm almost positive it was #1 on Hot 100.. those songs usually don't disappear.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 12 July 2011 18:53 (thirteen years ago)

i've never heard or even heard of this band. turns out they're awful. (had hoped i would like them, just so i could be that guy.)

Little GTFO (contenderizer), Tuesday, 12 July 2011 19:05 (thirteen years ago)

lol at alex in NYC's list of similar bands that don't sound anything like one another

Little GTFO (contenderizer), Tuesday, 12 July 2011 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

The common thread being that they all made meaningless music. So "lol" back at you, bottom-feeder.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 15 July 2011 15:39 (thirteen years ago)

I must admit I am lolling that NICKELBACK ended up having the longest streak of mainstream relevance out of those bands

Alex in NYC otm, also needs to be a poll

dave barry (absolutely clean glasses), Friday, 15 July 2011 15:45 (thirteen years ago)

a while back at my phone sales job I called someone whose ringer music was some country singer's version of "best I ever had". He slurred the consonants and vowels together like "bestaievverhaaayad"

two years pass...

"But under skinned knees and the skid marks" I know there's more than one way to make a skid mark, but I don't condone lyrics asking the listener to visualize "under the skid marks"

Always thought "We Are", the totally forgotten first single from the same album, was a jam

five years pass...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEUyGamAyX4

the production has some interesting touches that i'd forgotten about (if i had ever noticed to begin with)

if the singer's voice weren't so plain i suppose i could even enjoy the song. idk i'm probably just getting old.

dyl, Friday, 20 September 2019 04:00 (five years ago)

had me returning to matchbox 20's "bent" which had a v dramatic, swelling, expensive-sounding instrumental outro

apparently youtube user d_r_e_w came thru with that one as well

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_6mqJBt9GI

youtube user d_r_e_w staying on top of those early 2000s hot ac crossovers. i've just browed his channel and i'm upset he didn't make one for the evan and jaron song

dyl, Friday, 20 September 2019 04:04 (five years ago)

It just occurred to me what a ridiculous band name “Vertical Horizon” is.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 20 September 2019 04:07 (five years ago)

that vertical horizon album cover is quite memorable actually, like if someone had shown me the image w/o any text i probably wouldn't have remembered whose album it was but i reckon i would have known i'd seen it before
