This one really bothers me. I hate seeing this in reviews and especially in short blurbs.

the funny part is that it's so durable. remember reading reviews like that in rolling stone back in the 80s, and even then, as a kid, i knew exactly how the code worked.

aletti (this is the correct spelling) was actually writing about disco as it was happening, and was p much the only critic to do so in such a comprehensive way, so it has a very different feel -- a lot closer to how 'we' write about new music today

'songwriter's songwriter' = obscure singer-songwriter who wrote a couple of minor hits for Glen Campbell and Waylon Jennings in the '70s. he has some good ideas, but he's such a drab, uncharismatic performer that the only people who listen to his albums are other musicians, who do so more for academic reasons then for pleasure. 5-10 years after his death, The Forgotten Genius of [This Fucking Guy]: 1967-1975 comes out on Light in the Attic with PR and liner note blurbs courtesy of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and Six Organs of Admittance. P4K 8.9 BNR GENIUS.

rap steve gadd (D-40), Saturday, 21 June 2014 19:35 (eleven years ago)

"Boogie" should be enough, but I guess tacking on "southern-fried" is a Band-Aid (get it?), for the kids, who don't know what "boogie" means. That is, if there's a reason at all (oh yeah, could be for the flavah!). I'll 'low it.
Also, I know "overrated" just means, "some people actually enjoy this, or claim to, the nutless climbers", but Eddie Van Halen really is or was overrrated. You could snicker at Van Halen, becuase of the vocalists and songs, but Ed got a certain acknowledgement. He was effective sometimes, but jeez the same moves on every track (unless he added keyboards). Mainly it was like with William F. Buckley Jr in his heyday: "I'm no conservative, but I must tip my hat to your wit, sir!" No.
Some albums can be impressive for a while, then I get to the end, and realize: th-they really are less than the sum of their parts! But I'd rather try to figure out why, than just put it like that (at least if I'm getting paid to do so).
