1. Coltrane; 2. Cale or Cash, depending on whether you mean just John Cale solo (3.) or solo + Velvet Underground (2.); 4. JCM; 5. John Cage, but only because I don't know anything by him. If he has two songs better than "Check It Out," move him to fourth.

Voted Cage, mostly in tribute to the amazing exhibition about him at MOCA (in L.A.) in 1993.

Of course, when I consider that this means I voted *against* Coltrane and Cash, I feel like a dipshit. But I only get one vote, alas.

Love Coltrane, but had to vote Cage, who's been highly influential to my personal 'taste' development in music. Plus, indeed, "because he's said some of my favorite things about music"

...wow! (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 23 May 2011 09:08 (fourteen years ago)

ranked in order w/comments

1. coltrane - 2nd teenage jazz-god discovery after miles, occasionally listen now
2. cale - longtime favorite, still listen to 70s solo LPs fairly regularly
3. cash - early country fave, massive respect but rarely listen, don't like late work
4. cage - recent discovery, actively listening to some of his more traditional work
5. coug- mid 80s favorite, have pretty much gone off him and don't listen anymore

Obviously a silly poll, apples to oranges. For me it's Cale six times a week and twice on Sunday but that doesn't mean I think he should've won this poll as Coltrane clearly is the most significang name. It's just that he's not my thing, nor Cage.
