like when I was growing up I would grill every grownup I met about music to find out what people thought was good and when I'd run across one whose thing was fifties music he'd be like chuck berry, little richard, buddy holly, the big bopper -- like, the name would come up in the same breath that people who I still consider straight fuckin geniuses would come up. so when I finally realized that this weird rock-music-meets-music-hall dude was him I was like wow you guys really were a bunch of dumbshits who couldn't tell the difference between genius and bizarro-world novelty records, huh? y'all scare me

is how I felt & I sort of extended that to "if you were around in the fifties you probably lump the big bopper in with chuck fucking berry so fuck you," because I'm a punk who thinks very reductively

Conflating into one the wolves of Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs (and implying he is on good terms with the pigs)
Having the singer call himself both the Big Bopper and the Big Bad Wolf
Encountering Red from outside her locked door, where he knocks seeking entrance
Being apparently more frank, in saying "you're the swingin'est and that's no lie", and insisting on being let in promptly lest the rest of the household return first
Foregoing mentioning any fairy-tale-wolfish characteristics or behavior except a Three-Pigs-wolfish threat to blow the house down (unless one counts cackling laughter).

However, at least one site, which ignores the Bopper-recorded lyrics in listing his work, attributes the Blackwell/Pharaohs lyrics to the Big Bopper.

I'm reading a quick book on the plane crash, and both Maria Elena Holly and Adrienne Joy Bopper, I mean Richardson, were pregnant at the time of the crash. Holly's wife miscarried a few weeks later; Richardson's son, Jay, lived. I was curious as to whether he was still alive; he isn't.

In January 2007 Jay Richardson requested that his father's body be exhumed and an autopsy be performed in response to an internet rumor about guns being fired aboard the aircraft and Richardson initially surviving the crash.

(xpost) I'm just at that part. A gun was found at the site (Holly's, which he carried on the road because he often had a lot of cash on hand from shows), and one of the chambers was empty. One of the crazy theories was that when the plane started to go down, Holly--a pilot himself--pulled a gun on the pilot demanding to take over. Turned out the chamber was empty because whoever found the gun fired a shot to see if the gun worked.

That post above about the flying conditions--they were brutal, but the three principals were tired of travelling by barely-functioning school buses through road conditions just as bad.

This is obv. a lot more plausible than the “Buddy Holly, skyjacker” story… but what kind of nut finds a gun at a grisly crash site and fires it to see if it works?

(Also why is it suspicious if a gun is not fully loaded anyway?)

Had an idle moment recently where I thought to ask "how big was the Big Bopper really?" and was distressed to learn that his BMI was lower than mine.

Amendment to the gun story:

"The handgun didn't actually turn up till the spring thaw, when Albert Juhl chanced upon it while plowing his fields. One of the gun's five chambers was empty--which fed the rumours of on-board gun play. Albert Juhl, however, eventually revealed that he had fired the shot, curious whether or not the gun was in working order."

So months later, which makes more sense.

Didn't realize that Richardson wrote both "Running Bear" (Johnny Preston, #1) and George Jones' "White Lightning." His son thinks he would have given up performing quickly and gone on to be a songwriter exclusively.
