I'm talking about songs that suggest the singer is an actual pet owner, not Nugenty animal-sex metaphors

Get myself a steady job
some responsibility
can't even feed my cat
on social security

AC/DC, "Down Payment Blues"

Rose Tattoo "Stuck On You"

He accidentally murders several pets, IIRC.

the morals of a tomcat and the manners of a wolf (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 12:42 (fourteen years ago)

yup!

I had a colored parrot, but it made me cry
I just forgot to feed it, and the little bugger died
I had a fish named Sam, he lived in bowl
I heated up the water, so he wouldn't get cold
Now he's gone, now he's gone

By-Tor & The Snow Dog!

Actually I'm not sure if the Snow Dog is exactly a pet but he does have disciples.

I was about to mention Snow Dog but I dont think he's a pet. Apparently he saves civilization in that song, so I don't think he's necessarily domesticated.

it's always cracked me up how Alice In Chains made the phrase "household pet" sound so ominous on "The Rooster"

I'm not endorsing it, but...

booooooooo, so doesn't qualify

da croupier, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 16:32 (fourteen years ago)

though apparently poison does have at least one song that counts

from "Shut Up, Make Love":

Can't find a good wife can't find a good job
Can't find the keys to my car
I lost my dog I lost my brain
I lost my girl to a big movie star (whatever)

Paranthetical whatever = genius from on high.

the ban on Nugenty animal-sex metaphors really limits things.

Nazareth - Woke Up This Morning

any rocker can be a dog in heat, it takes a special rocker to feed & provide for one.

da croupier, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

those nazareth lyrics

Woke up this morning
My dog was dead
Someone disliked him
And shot him through the head
I woke up this morning
And my cat had died
I'm gonna miss her
Sat down and cried
Came home this evening
My hog was gone
The people here don't like me
I think I'll soon move on

Did Alice Cooper never write a song about his snake?

immer wieder, ralf & günther (NickB), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 17:14 (fourteen years ago)

Alice has a ditty called "I'm Alive (That Was the Day My Dead Pet Returned to Save My Life)" though it appears to be about a cowboy's ghost horse or something.

Yes - 'Owner Of A Lonely Hart'

PG Harpy (Doran), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 18:07 (fourteen years ago)

The Who, "Melancholia" (yeah, it's hard rock):

"The dust is thick/ the dog is sick/ the kids have picked most all the flowers"

shake it, shake it, sugary pee (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 18:33 (fourteen years ago)

Horses and dragons don't really count as pets do they?

Bass Solo (Matt #2), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 18:38 (fourteen years ago)

If someone refers to OWNING a dragon as a pet, I'm almost tempted to allow it

da croupier, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 18:42 (fourteen years ago)

slaying a dragon or describing a wizard who owns a dragon def doesn't count, though
